Ok. So, first week in November, I guess my goal are Steelhead and Trout. Where are the best locations again for a newbie? There are a lot of acronyms on these forums like DSR, SR, LFZ, etc. I know some of them, is there a master map or key for a new guy to know what all of you are talking about?

Get together at my place Nov 4th in the evening- cmon over. Take a look at the party #2 post. If you come down cort2 through Orwell to Richland your very close to me. Also a left there will take you right to mid river at the Pineville bidge- decent fishing area. Wife X country skis in Redfield - only bout 25 minutes to the upper Res area. As a dedicated late season upper river guy thats where I'd be cause thats where the fish are headed. Would be fishin the deep runs, seams and pools with egg sacs for Steel too. Later in the season the tenting is gonna be tough up there - tons of snow. Sometimes a few feet on the ground is normal all winter.

(write something witty on it, and leave a crayon hanging from it so he can sign in). later d00d

Thanks for the info. So, what exactly is the DSR? Do you have to pay to get in there? I looked at the maps on this site, I do not see any upper res. Are we talking about the Salmon River Reservoir, or Redfield Reservoir? And if I'm fishing the res. is this wader type fishing, or off of the shore?

DSR=pay to play. There is a larger res, Redfield, and a much smaller hoding res, lighthouse, on the river. If you are fishing either one you should have a boat or tube, some fine largemouth eat poppers there. Above the upper res is trout water. It does not give up its secrets easily. And wild brookie water from trickles with a giant beinf 5-6 in to large streams such as the Mad River witch holds larger brookies but is mostly private water.

lower res does have a nice stockie rainbow program and they actually will sip dry flies in the early summer before they're all caught... a tube or yack would definitely help you with the large mouth fishing in the lower res; but ive managed to catch large mouths from the bank the few times ive gone... upper res; havent done that; but everything wader said about it i have heard form others... dsr is on ct. rte. 5 just a little out of village of pulaski; come all the way down rt. 2 from redfield to village; when you get to jefferson st. make a left and at the first light make a right; take this down about 2 miles and DSR will be on the left; its 45 dollars for a daily pass... good luck; and keep the questions coming because most will get answered here...

For November, I'm going to stick with the Steelhead and Trout. I would prefer to stay on the upper part of the SR if I can, where I can wade being that I don't have a boat or anything. I will have to stick with one of the public parking spots along the river. As far as my set-up goes. I have everything I need now except for the bait, which I will purchase once I get up there. Besides the cleated rubber booted waders, do I need spikes on top of them? Do I need a net?(that is assuming I catch something{based on my luck with hunting, not likely.}.) I have 12# test and 10# leader. I think the guy at Cabelas said to tie the hook to the leader, which is tied to the line. Does the swivel go in between the leader and line? Than the weight goes 18-? inches above the hook.......?

Lots of questions here so I quoted you so I can try to get to them all. Depending on water flow you can wade the entire rvrer. Remember that the water the steelhead hold in moves closer to the bank under heavy flows and you don't have to wade deep, sometimes not at all during dangeroud water flows. PUBLIC ACCESS CAN PUT YOU ON ALL YHE WATER ON THE RIVER. Sometimes it requires a hike and after a blizzard that is not easy. Some sort of metal studs on rubber soles is what is needed,if what you have is not good enough you will know in a hurry and you can go to any local tackle shop and purchase korkers. A swivle or loop tied at the end of your line will work. Be sure your tippet is at least 2 lbs lighter than your main line. That will insure that the tippet breaks 90% of the time saving you time and not leaving long strands of mono in the river to tangle you or other fishers later. Weight by law can be no further 4 feet from the hook. I keep mine betreen 18 in and 2 feet or so from the hook. The longer that distance the bigger the % of lined fish will be roughly speaking. Hope this helped I am sure others will jump in later.

you mean fish like these ? Yea I know you seen them before but we are waiting for freshies.. First advise I can give since you are relatively new at the game is, a guide will increase your chances and learning by 100.. It's really a good investment when you consider the knowledge one gains in one day verses taking multiple trips or getting frustrated trying to figure things out. Which I do guide Steelhead & Browns: License#4977 forever wild outfitters.. Or I could recommend other "good" ones to you.. If that is out of reach for you then all the advice given above is great advice.. We have tried to explaining detail as much information as possible about how to have success on the river ..Keep asking any questions you may have and we (I) will try and answer them as best as possible.. November is Prime time for both Trout species : If you fish lower in the river (public access) you will find very fresh fish entering.. The first public stop would be the Black hole , besides the estuary.. The Higher you go in the river you will encounter fish looking to spawn (browns) and feeding steelhead behind them.. Good Luck

All good advice fellas. A guide is not in the budget, especially with all of the stuff I have been buying just to go up there and attempt to fish. , a friendly day of fishing with some friendly experienced anglers is always a good thing. ;) Anyone have any recommendations for a good, warm, waterproof jacket?

ORIGINAL: dtrobe Anyone have any recommendations for a good, warm, waterproof jacket? all depends how "fashionable" you want to be on da Riva. Cabela's Goretex brand just above $100 works for me - when and if I use it. Otherwise, fleece or wool layers (same stuff used for hunting) and a cheap hooded vinyl poncho with zipper that rolls up in a tiny wad when not needed. Only time I wear that is to cut wind or keep dry if the skies really open up. Standing in one spot all day - vs- hiking around is a factor to consider also. Sweat = Not Good.

think fishing websites are tarded? they gotz nothing over the hunting sites - where everyone and his uncle are trying to sell you $18 flashlights for $149 (after stamping Predator Kill Light on the case, howz about NV goggles and suppressors for a mere $800, they look clasy next to your $400 e-caller unit. As you can see in my pictures that is the jacket I wear.. I waited 2 years for it to go on sale and paid $119.00 for it.. Is it a $200. jacket, no way, but I have had mine for 3 years and still performs daily.. Only drawback, no front side pockets. Mine is a Large and I'm a med build.. It fits nice with a hoodie underneath as you can see so make sure you buy up one size.. The jacket is only intended to hold gear and be rain/windproof as said it's whats under that counts..

Well since there has so much bickering around here lately, I wanted to bring it back to some fishing advice. First off, are "cleated" rubber boots going to be suitable for November? Do I need different baits depending on whether I'm going for Steels or Trout? I have been reading the "locals" thread, but what are my best option for food when I go up there?

Trobe ; rubber waders can be used in november. I started off wearing rubber hip boots up there as a child since children waders were unheard of back then. And yes I wore them in the winter... I don't suggest them but there's no reason you can't get by with them. November can be a funny month up there. It can go from mild weather one day to frigid weather the next... Definitely get some type of korkers or cleats to put on them. Good luck Bobbers: don't listen to anyone who mocks bobbers; fish how ever you'd like and enjoy; Tackle for steel in november will be much different from what you'd use for salmon now. If you're spin fishing try some egg sacs either bottom bounced or under a float... don't be afraid to try flies on the spinning rig either... for flies; I believe you can go back on some recent posts and some older ones in which many pattern suggestions have been mentioned and even shown.... good luck

Rubber with some kind of metal studs will help you not get either wet or hurt. You need all the grip you can get on the SR rocks. Fishing for steel or browns (fewer) is basicly trout fisning. Do what you are comfotable doing at home, sometimes the scale is bigger, but trout are trout. Food- depends on time and taste. If you are there for a few days and like barfood the Altmar hotel will fill the bill and your plate [image] [/image]

Very interesting information. I'm about to take a trip to New York and fish Oak Orchard. I would assume just about everything I read about the SR would also apply there. First time fishing there so I really enjoyed all the comments about salmon fishing. Maybe I missed it but what types/size flys are generally used for salmon. I can remember about 30 years ago(when I was young and foolish) going to the Bert Dam area and using nothing but a ball of yarn tied around a hook - guess it was snagging. Any comments or advice would be appreciated. I do fish some of the Erie tribes for steelhead and practice C&R which is great fun but a friend asked me to join him on a trip for salmon and I need some input. Will be fishing with 8 weight fly rod. Thanks in advance.

Wally Cat,I've never been to Oak Orchard but have n't heard anything positive from those that have. But on to your question, wooly buggers and streamers work in size 6 thru 10.Egg patterns, glo bugs, estez flies, nympths all work in various colors, size 8 thru 14.Take your Erie flies with you and 10# thru 6# flora tippet, use for the salmon and trout that will be there now.
