upcoming season

Hey guys
We all carp and talk bout the things we do not like to see on the river and we all have different ways of dealing with it.
You know- the outright snagging and rudeness as well as those who jump into your little spot with you as soon as they think there is a fishie there and snag away.
Lets hear how you folks are gonna deal with it this year. We are all there to have a nice time and fish in our own style and enjoy the River but there are those times---
Personally I like to carry a few extra things to give to a guy who would like to do it 'right' and or hand the rod to any kid around to enjoy a fish when hooked up. Makes me feel good personally and may help somebody  catch the disease we all have.
Some guys choose to ignore it all and some carry a garbage bag and pickup trash and others----
What do you intend to do----

Make only one trip in Sept.

Then I'll be back after Thanksgiving....

Slammin season does nothing for me anymore, I'd rather fish the unmolested Pa streams in the fall.

As I did last year when the decision was made to stop guiding Salmon..

Retreat to the solitude in the mountains and Brook Trout fish..

Somewhat of what draker says too, but probably 2 in september and 2 or 3 in august(mailny to work on stringing rafters, skinning plywood and laying steel roofing down) but I will start steelheading lower river in late october as usual (sometimes earlier) for those monsters.... its more so steelhead season that I am more willing to throw a helping hand out. The trash pick up is definitely a given though; and the polite hello to all passing anglers as well...

Well I still like to chase the Salmon, but mostly in the "zones".If they would close or open them to all types I would never return. So that's where I fish and most of the people in the "zones",particullarly the UFZ are actually trying to FISH for them.As I mentioned before I really enjoy helping those that don't have a clue and get them into a few the right way.
For Steelhead I tend to travel west to Erie, both in Penna and Ohio, because it's like a fantasyland if you hit it right.I have had 60-75 fish days out there several times and that gets addicting. However, those streams are really affected by the weather,so last year I wound up on the SR in Nov.
I won't fish below the bridge after the end of Sept. as I tend to express my opinion of what I see and it's just not worth the hassle.

I like to chase Salmon all over the River- Not gonna stop cause of someones antics. Just grin bear it and try and have some impact here and there for the good of the whole 'thing'. Then try and find a spot to yourself.
Love the skin photo - really made me think bout Salmon fishing. Knew the hijack would come sooner or later.

I hope to hit the Coho run again at least one day, then just find a piece of quiet river where there are probably more fish than people. Crowds= scared fishies and no unwinding (and that's a big part of fishing).
If someone were to ask for help I'm happy to, or if someone wants to share a hole, chat, whatever. All the better.
I will carry some trash out, and I will be flipping out on a litterbug or someone who just has to kerplunk and yank the same run I am drifting even though it seemingly has neigh a fish and there isn't another soul for the 1/2 mile up or down river. This is why I don't carry a gun.

Guess this last couple of weeks before 'they' arrive is the worst. Guys on the other thread arguing bout wether or not some guy saw Carp or Salmon in the Estuary- who cares?---They aint runnin yet......
Always get a kick outa the big August stories- Notice the hotels and motels are NEVER sold out this time of year sooooooo-
When THEY get here try and be nice or helpful to at least one guy a day- hope it catches on.
Nutty time comin up-Turkey, Deer,Salmon,Steel,Browns?, and snaggers.

For a newcomer to the river, I had dinner and lunch bought for me a couple of times last winter and had some nice invites to other places. All I did for it was be myself. I gave some flies that worked and some tips to some guys from Philly, and helped a guy from Long Island catch his first steel.  I was so rippin mad from my salmon experience in the 80's I never wanted to go  back. I hope to go this Sept.  and hook a few, because I know alot more now, and can ask some questions here if I get stuck.  I hope I can be exactly the same as I am later in the year. Friendly, helpful, an ambassador of good will. I defend myself, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt, too. I'm a hothead, so it isn't easy, but I'll breathe deep and try to focus on the fish. Nov. 15th the game will really be on for me. My wife goes and fills a backpack with garbage; I help on the walk out. I  got to keep in mind for all the f.... a..h....
there's people like the ones on this board who are the kind of fisherman that makes fishing the great sport it is.

Charlie are you sure we have never met ??? Yes there are some great people just as you described yourself that I have met over the years on the tribs.. That’s the folks I like I to share water and good times with..

In my teens I was horrified by the stories about the salmon river during salmon season and wanted nothing to do with it at all. My dad wanted to try for really big stream trout or salmon so we got some Intel about steelhead.. Not the crowds but most times you were fishing the conditions more then the fish is what we were told.. Well we always been comfortable in the outdoors no mater the weather so in 1980 he took me up for our first SR experience in early march .. Low and behold I caught my first steelhead using a fly rod with a spinning reel taped to the handle. I had Rubber Ranger waders with a snowmobile suit underneath (yea not too smart). On my line was a black Matuka fly.. Believe me I will never forget that moment and all that went with.. It was the only fish caught that entire weekend but we were both Hooked on steelhead for life.. We did steelhead frequently for about 3 years at various times from dec-april and the learning & knowledge came from helpful folks like many here.. So after that time we decided to try the salmon thing.. It was the craziest display of disrespect we ever witnessed and didn’t go back.. Fishless by the way.. So as time went by I had a car and was able to drive myself (dad still didn’t want part) and I decided there must be something I can get out of the fishery for Salmon.. And I did.. I found (met) the right people who taught me the right things.. Not to fall into traps and keep moving to find willing fish.. That also keep me from boiling over when the not so good wanders my way..
So through out the years I felt I conquered the fishery as a whole and wanted to help others which is why I became a guide.. I loved fishing for salmon and teaching others salmon fishing but decided last year(with the help of the crappy economy) that I have done all I can in that field (salmon) .. I honestly could care less If I ever catch another river Chinook or Coho and want to spend that time in the bliss of the Adirondack Mountains catching brook trout and hiking mountains which I have done through out my entire life.. I continue guiding trout, deer, turkeys, rabbits & camping trips.. Don’t get me wrong I will salmon fish but it's not my priority any longer.. I still get a jacked up thrill for the Brown & Steelhead and know that will never change.. See I'm a true-blue trout fisherman at heart..

It's Always great to know there are still good folks like those here that share a passion for the fishery and respect the outdoors.. Thats what keeps me shooting off advice and my knowledge on an open forum.. Be it Salmon or trout.. I will feel honored to share water with you guys..

    Ah.. all sappy again.. sorry.....

    P.S.
My only regret was that I took my twin boys salmon fishing first when they were young.. They never wanted to go back there.. Now they have children of their own .. Which all willing I hope to take Steelhead fishing first !!

I'm pretty convinced pay- to play is the way to go for the sharks.I think I've read and learned  enough here to make an informed decision.  In the snow is a different story.  It's amazing how 4 wheel drive, and snowshoes thin out the slobs.  The FZ's are fun, too.  I remember a late afternoon  in Feb. where there was 8 of us working the several seams  right upstream of the Altmar Bridge -4 on the rocks-4  across on the sandbar. Noone ever crossed drifts, we all caught fish, we all helped land and get pics of fish, and everyone went home just itchin' to get back.  I know lots think that's the kiddie pool- strange the loudest yells were from  the guys that realized they'd snagged one and broke it off immediately. I'd fish next to any of those guys anytime, anywhere. It's one thing to fish in a crowd, it's another when half can't fish worth a **** and another good portion don't give a **** about anyone else. If a kid crosses me up, or a begginer, I'll give him some casting tips if they want and give them as much room as I can manage, not so the arrogant and aggressive...

I just keep to myself, living here i can go to the river anytime, sure i pick up trash and help some people out when they ask or seem like good people. I know im kinda bitter being a local, cause ive had alot of run ins with arrogance and stupidity so i just keep to myself. But im not opposed to helping out new people that are courteous and such.

Hell last year i was under the long bridge and a 7 year old kid thought he got snagged up on the bottom so his dad was on his way over, when i looked out with my glasses on and the kid actually had a coho on the line and was just sitting in the current not moving. After this 7 year old kid didnt let anyone take the rod he fought for a good 25 minutes by himself, but seems though they were wearing hip waders and standing on the bank, i ran up the hill to my truck and grabbed my net so he could land it.

After it was all said and done, the kid had a new fish, pictures, my stringer to pull it up the hill and a recipe i emailed to his dad that he could cook it with. Never seen them again, heard from them, or anything else, but i guarantee that kid will be up here again and again.
