THIS IS BY FAR NOT THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP SKEIN, BUT HERE GOES: CUT THE SKEIN IN BAIT SIZE CHUNKS, LET IT DRY A LITTLE ON PAPER TOWELS, SPRINKLE ON- OR SHAKE IN A PAPER BAG WITH 20 MULE TEAM BORAX AND PUT IN ZIPLOCK. IT WILL KEEP FOR WEEKS IN THE FRIDGE.
TO FISH IT  RUN YOUR LINE THRU THE HOOK EYE,TIE A SNELL KNOT ON THE SHANK OF THE HOOK,PULL SOME LINE THRU THE EYE TO CREATE A LOOP, INSERT SKEIN IN LOOP, PULL TIGHT

Option, same as above cut to size desired, use about six layers of news paper tilt a bit let drain, coat liberally with any jello, cherry, orange, green apple, let drip. Put on new news paper, roll in a little more jello, bag when eggs stop dripping, skien will last all season and will not fade out in water. Ive used the same skien all day on tip ups and is just as red ,orange or green as first put in the water. you will be quite surprised at the texture and hook holding characteristic. 50 cent worth of jello goes a long way.

I have not tried the jello method, but I usually just coat the skein in borax for about 24 hours, rinse, dry with a paper towel and freeze in small portions until needed.  I don't use much skein myself, but I have a couple of friends that like it.

Just as an aside, I wonder if a mixture of jello and borax would be a good idea.  I think I will give that a try the next time I get some skein.

Thanx for the tip.  I've been using the borax for a long time.  I don't cut my skein before curing though.  I usually cure a whole piece and cut it to the desired size on the trib.  I have some fresh skein here and I'm gonna try the Jello thing this weekend for my next trip up.  Is there a clear jello if I want to make then natural color?  What color Jello works best for hardwater fishin in February?

Freezing it  turns it to mush, treat it with salt or borax and refrid, it until next use.

i have to disagree with that.  been freezing it for 7 years.  mine never gets mushy.  it will if you try to refreeze for sure.  1st time no problem.  cut it into chunks before freezing then you dont have to tear pieces off on the stream.

Thanks for the information guys.  That will be helpful future forward.  I am a noob and wanted to take a second to thank all of you who routinely provide, accurate and truthful information in the spirit of the sport.  It is also obvious that there are those members who choose to not share and criticize those who do.  IMO that is just too bad.  Over the years I have been a member of several, active boards.  I learned, for example, with the help of many how to completely restore a car.  Yes, I did my own research and adapted what I learned to my own style BUT, I must say that without the help of other enthuasists. . .the project and the learning curve whould have been much different.  Again, thanks to those who will share basic info that will, if further researched and explored, make readers of their posts better sportsman.

    Thanks!
