ORIGINAL: retired guy Browns for the past few years have used their instinctive inborn nasty rotten subvervisive radar to completley avoid me. Â Any advise as to what they might be interested in this time of year- now that ya have my blood boiling for the weekend. Thanks for the tip- will be there. Natural looking bugs - same ones you would use on your home waters, hares-ear, pheasant tail nymphs and such. Those island browns are smallish, but oh so purdy... you won't get run over by the rubber-hatchers either. One of my favorite spots on da riva... p.s. - I'd park in the Pineville Fly Shop lot, doubt they would care since they are closed now... Short stroll to da water -vs- crossing in 750 flows....

dont know where his pad is but true on the north.. rt, swing a few in the pool/run below the bridge to get a feel for the rod then work the tail for some gasping atlantics or trout.. If your really into things keep on working down stream . there is some purdy water (riffs) below all the way to the Ace.. Plenty of back cast water all the way till you hit the Ace which is best fished from the south side.. Flies ? I'd do woolies for just about anything this time of year..

Hey RT, not trying to "trap" you or discourage your way of fishing.. Just wondering if your a lefty and reason behind the way you prefer.. Neither is Right Or Wrong.. What ever works best for that person may be best for them. Being right handed I prefer myself, to stand "river right" when fly fishing.. Of course this is not always possible. When spin fishing could care less & have no clue with a spey.. Again being that I love back casting , river right means that I can pick up the line from down stream and in 1 motion haul the line behind then shoot the cast without turning my body or first tension casting before making the back cast.. If on "river left" the line flows down stream across my body which forces me to first turn to the left (down stream) then make a tension cast upstream followed by a back cast.. It's just more motions.. The Same goes for a roll cast (being river left) except instead of the upstream tension cast, I must raise my rod to the right and bring the line towards me then roll the line out in front across my body to make a right(upstream) roll . just think of a big C arch.. Again an extra step for me.. Nothing wrong with how you like to fish be it lefty or righty, Just something you might want to try that may aid in casting (river right).. And as said you can't always get what you want (river right). Anyone else ?

Great points tuna and I mostly agree with the back hand end of it... for roll, switch and two handed, I actually can switch hands to my comfort or liking for the given situation. Although im capable of this, it is not always necessary though. Typically my goal is to pull the bulk of my line upstream from me with my fly landing within my vicinity (sometimes a strip or two if i have a lot of line out) from there I bring my rod back down stream to create a "D" loop and then flick the rod forward to roll my rope out. Sometimes I form a zigzag pattern in front of me rather than the typical D loop. This all depends on clearances of anglers or any natural obstructions.... with all of this being said; id rather show you one day instead of trying to explain sooner than later hopefully... btw... my zig zag cast is pretty sweet, I think you'll get a kick out of it toona.

Dont know bout all that but I just feel comphy with the current running down from my right side. Do the other way too but prefer the South side as much as possible But then we all know the fishies tend to be on the right side of any stream. therefore whenever approaching a waterway always fish to your right to catch more of them. Unless ,of course, when your standing mid stream. In over 30 years I have never fished that area right above Pineville Bridge. Have gone up around the bend years ago for Steel but never around that island above the bridge and that area from the bend down to the bridge - look forward to learning it. Always parked at the entrance to Tressel and went down the steep bank and upstream - long ago.

hey RT, cant sleep got a lot on my mind with this shoulder thing so here I am once again.. You ought to re-read what I wrote about "river right" and think about it a bit.. Like I said there is nothing wrong with what makes you comfortable but just some basics that may help you improve on your casting ability if you feel you are having problems. If you think about it, it just makes sense and less fatigue not having to make the extra motions. Even if you just make a simple tension cast upstream, the line is already loaded and no need to turn your body.. Also with the river flowing right your sensitivity to a bite and reaction is quicker for a hook set as the line passes in front then below.. All this given your right handed and not a switch hitter like db.. Just trying to help and not saying right or wrong.. Good luck.. P.S. That section (south) in Pineville is really only good from the bridge up to the old dam for practice casting.. Yea on the south side above the dam and below the bridge is good fishing too but kinda a b!tch fly casting.. Might want to stick to the North side and work all the way down to the Ace for a full days work out.. Either way You Have a good time..

HT - describe exactly where the old dam just above Pineville was - I never heard of that one. Casting techniques based on river right, river left? I don't think that hard when fishing. My main consideration is not taking a swim - casting technique is secondary, sometimes thirdonary . The reason I would not wade fish below Pineville from the north side in 750 flow is because that first step is a freakin dooozy. RT - the little resident gems hang in the S Side channel of the island - chillin in the shade..

ORIGINAL: retired guy  Always parked at the entrance to Tressel and went down the steep bank and upstream - long ago. I fell into a sinkhole at the bottom of that steep bank path once, quicksand-like stuff, , the more I tried to get out, the deeper I sank - was barely able to reach out to the trunk of a nearby sapling in order to pull myself from the evil grip of Mother Earth.. I laid there, mud covered, completely exhausted and disoriented, like a beached mudshark. I would have posted this in the Funny Things thread, but it was anyting but funny.

Thanks Drake- looked at the area today in the overhead photos just to get familiar-will certainly fish there a while and try and break the Brown drought- also gotta get out on some bigger water and mess around with that new rig. In a smaller area like that agree with Tuna on the river left thing- specially if throwing upstream nymphs.. In bigger water the other doesnt bother me much- Not that much of a fly fisher so as to feel the difference I guess.

Hey Drake- thanks I recall that mudhole on the bottom of that steep bank quite clearly. Tried to go around it once and ended up about halfway down the Tressel road. How in creation can a guy get mixed up in that little stretch of wooded hillside? Felt like I oughta look for a chapter of Dopes R Us or leave a trail of breadcrumbs.

Probably my last post on this thread- really thank all for the advise given- Tried the rig Sat up by the Pineville bridge rememberance. Worked very well though still need more practice. Had a 'hearthrob moment' when after bout 2 hours the front two sections went flying off into the water when casting. They came back to me VERY carefully. Gotta be a bit more attentive to putting them together firmly and checking them from time to time. Bout the only thing I may have done differently was to have loaded the 8 wt rod with a 10 wt line. I did a 9 wt and its fine but just does not seem to be of a good weight when casting. Hope thats just me not being used to it cause going over by 2 wts seems a bit much. Am still snapping a bit too quick when loading and throwing it and find the best casts are the easy but firm ones-try too hard and its a mess. GREAT rod for high sticking, tending and roll casting. The length seemed awkward at first then over time it was perfect. It plays 8 inch smallmouth very well- not a joke here- the rod has neat sensitivity. Had no trouble at all getting out bout 50 feet and am working on longer stuff.

Rt.. sounds like you are fond of the rod but are looking for those hero drifts ? 5o' cast with no problem seems much plenty to me.. well I'm sure you just want to stretch the legs on that baby. Given it's a switch rod your looking at single/double spey and roll casts.. You'll just have to work these things out.. Do a search on youtube, I'm sure they got some good videos on casting but in the end it's gonna be up to you to master things.. 10wt line.. Nah... You did fine.. Practice, make better.. 4pc rod.. Yup.. 3 times more chance of coming apart.. clean & check the ferrules often.. One thing that may also happen during early fall is the ferrules may swell from heat(sun) and NOT come apart.. If happens just hold rod under water for a time.. Casting: as said above.. Thing with spey casting however is line speed.. That zigzag thing as db refers to, it's all about line speed, not too fast/not too slow.. You'll get it.. What about the reel ? good /bad/ ugly ? sounds like you had fun and thanks for the report back..

great to hear RT; tuna is right with line speed; grace plays a big part as well...i do have a 13' 7 weight that throws a #9 weight forward pretty sweet. also, the final flick to propel the line relies on your lower gripping hand rather than your upper think of it as a flick rather than a hurl

Tuna- the reel is very nice- only issue was a bit of dirt in it that quickly washed out. Had set it down on the ground and something got in the reel. Guess that open stuff must be prone to that. Do have to watch the line retrieve with it though with that wide face it is also prone to getting too much line filling one side when not watching. Overall great rig - would suggest it. Was throwing bout 11' of #5 Drennan with a smaller wooly bugger most of the time.
