so how much is not enough for salmon ? I'm happy with 100 yards as long as it fills the spool. Too little backing on a large spool will coil your fly line like a b!tch and even cause it to wrap around it's self causing real havoc.. Too much backing on a large reel is just a waste imo..

A few times I have had to start over again when respooling reels - put too much backing on and the fly line won't fit... one of the downfalls of buying them big economy sized spools of backing and guessing when to stop... I usually fill till the line (backing & fly line) is about 1/8" from the cross supports on the reel I've actually considered putting the fly line on first and then adding the backing to get the right amount - sounds stupid - but I'm not shiniset pebble in the rock pile...:)

Too much backing on a large reel is just a waste imo.. 100 yds is perfect. I have seen and have/had plenty of reels that wouldn't even hold 75 yards if you were to put the line class they labeled it is. I think of 100 yards as a minimum....

hey not to steal someone’s idea , but another site has a great TOPIC just plain-n-simple Salmon River B.S. Kinda makes sense, keeps everything all on one page and nobody gets off topic.. Maybe someone could come up with a catchy name here for just an all out B.S. session.. Of course if there is something specific that they want addressed then start a new topic but in the end we all know where it will end up.. Thoughts ?

Hey Tuna- got itchy and bit the bullet this afternoon before reading this page of posts-- Drove over to Cabelas and got the 11'6'' LSI Switch in 8 wt and DID get the Lamnson 9 wt reel. Its a 3.5 large arbor that carried a bit over 200 yds of backing plus the 9 wt wt foreward floating Steelhead line. Couldnt beat the deal - got the upgraded reel with the package for only a bit more and they threw in the fly line ( $70) and decent backing. Came real close to the 10 wt reel but its a 4.0 and seemed a bit large. 9 wt 3.5 felt just right. They didnt have the right wt line in the 'deal' line section so the upgraded that for zippo. Thanks for all the help guys - VERY much appreciated. Just read the several previous posts and frankly my reel looks pretty full- will have to mess with it a bit and then if needed empty it and cut off a few yards of backing. UGGGGH HEEEY- If Dime gets to be a Moddo we hafta fish at DSR all the time? -or get DAS BOOT.

Great rt, im sure you'll love it; and as time goes on you will gain interest in another rig as well. There's nothing wrong with having a few different sticks for different applications or just plain old self satisfaction. Good luck. Hey---Speakin bout the 18th. I know were gonna go over to Dimes but what bout gettin together for fishing too that day or the next. We keep poking around with fishing stuff bout getting together but maybe we oughta make it a firm thing. Might all be thinking a bit differently bout the same things or something like that- Lets make it a firm thing. Hate to say it but the DSR might not be a bad place for a group thing. Specially a bit early on in the season. Upriver on the 18 or 19th could turn out to be a bust if the weather dont come around and plans should be made kinda early on. We could easily have a second plan depending on the weather and fishing conditions as we are all on here for it anyhow.

ORIGINAL: metalslayer PS the diff is I will use ALOT less weight than ur running line how do you know that??? weight varies depending on where you are fishing... a hooked fishes reaction varies depending what type of water it is resting or running in... for salmon i use enough weight to be just above the bottom or sometimes midway water column... it all depends on the fishies mood, also depth, velocity, and level of water ps. monofilament has a faster sink rate than a FLOATING fly line.... pps... no competition here man, just ball bustin... id share water with you any day; heck i probably already have shared water with you

If it's too full cut some of the back end of your fly line off. A little goes a long way compared to wasting allot of backing. We never use the whole 90 or 110 feet up there anyway. Set the hook and land one at 100 feet and you mind as well walk on water too...
