ORIGINAL: dimebrite Funny stuff; yes there are plenty of snaggers over there, but im referring to the brown trout guys who rig like that who just let a similar rig sit on the bottom in the deep back eddy's.... theyjust sit and watch until their rod starts pulling. No snagging involved at all here.... not my cup of tea though... Deep Back Eddy's in Oswego River? I was not aware of any, unless you count the little bit of frog water above Lock#7 - or the water filled trench at the bottom of the high wall... are you feeshin above the dam?

HT,I mostly fish the "zones" now.I've been having a lot of action with a tradional bucktail streamer and a sprucefly, along with conehead woolybuggers in olive/brown/black.These are natural subdued colors,I wonder if those flashy streamers work up there, have you used them in the "zones"?

LOVE IT-- Pretty much decided what rod and reel to get now am getting a nice education on what ta use too. No wonder I had limited luck with Sharks and was doin OK on Trout. Was using the same # 8 to #12 flies for both - Guess gaudy big thingies in a #4 or so are in order early on. THANKS Startin ta feel like that Brown shoe at a Formal dance again.

Chartruese, Blue and Purple, whether mixed in with natural colors, or on their own, have always worked well in the Upper Fly Zone. (e.g. egg-sucking leech). I have no idea why. Maybe it is just the confidence level when chucking them and providing the right sillouette to the fish..who knows.. The Lake O tribs and the circus colors used to fish them are an anomoly to the average trout/salmonoid fisher.

My # 1 steelhead pattern in the zone (UFZ) is a 3906b #4 big and gaudy.. I will show you how to tie it when we meet up. but below are 2 zone fish; for browns no.. again big size # 6 stones , woolly buggers or even just egg pattern work best. 2 UFZ fish: Now I probably totally threw you for a loop RT.. LOL.. But yes early on before they start spawning, go flashy.. but by all means ALWAYS go big or go home.. LOL....

I've been thinking about throwing somebobbers with a maribou fly under a bead for kings and hoes...Maybe this year will be the first... I had some nicely cured trout eggs on ice but I think either my fathers or brothers girlfriend threw them out. I was tempted to throw out their fly boxes once I saw them in the garbage... I spent a lot of time on them. I may have one frozen pack left; if your lucky i'll share

yup, sacks are something some men have and some don't but once again a true egg man would only use skein in an egg loop (same as your snelled) if he had any sacks at all.. Mr. Alaska LMAO.. nah they are all bead snaggers up there now.. I like the SR better where the real fishermen fish.. good thread and glad your playin along...

This one worked well for me, sz. 6 heavy nymph hook. It also worked with Pink estaz and a pink Mcfly foam thorax cover. Too many steps to tie though, I'm going to fish beads . Charlie

good thing we are not snoobs and must stay on topic ,lol charlie, great fly and i bet that would be killer on browns.. speaking of beads.. have you ever tied a double bead stone ? tied and tried these last year..mmmmmmmm yummy.. takes away almost any need for weight or trying to lead wrap the fly.. it is tedious to tie so some snobs might not want to try it.. but i'd suggest you giving it a go.. again thanks for the look at your fly that I will now tie too..

Tasty! Double the fun, double the pleasure. Yessir, have to copy a few of those HT ... much easier than lead wraps, hey, I live where I can only get tin lead substitute, even worse...DB -3 vices at your camp? God knows what weird things might end up coming off them... might almost work half as well as sacks... I'd like to try a CP . Some of the nicest and most ethical guys I've met on the river have been pinners. Charlie

So I figured id google it; it seems as if the true snoobs frown upon those who snell the skein to their hook. The proper way involves close to 30 wraps and a few more steps vs. My 3 loop snell knot. Now keep in mind; this is from one snoob to another and then to another...

If anyone is interested- I picked up an Orvis Wonderline Gen.3 10 wt. Double Taper for 12 bucks today! They're a 60 dollar line. They have a short front taper then a long belly, pretty much the same as the steelhead/salmon line. They do well in cold water, too. I tested it out on my 9 wt. xp and it rocks. Shark rig is set. I live near Manchester VT. where they have a big discount store. If anyone is interested I'll have them put one aside til I get back on the 8th and then I'll mail them. Let me know by 9 tomorrow morning. Sorry for the short notice. Charlie

Hey- to continue with the intent of this thread- Went trout fishing today at two places I havent fished in a coupla years. Both are -forget that - were well stocked and generally had some holdovers as well as carrying a few natives here and there. Always fished them through the Summer with good results. The first had a CONSERVATION groups poster along the road welcoming hikers and forbidding Hunters and fishermen. The second had a LAND TRUST sign along the road welcoming everyone but Hunters- bout a hundred yards in they had a second line of signs with absolutly no Trespassing for anybody. Neither was stocked of course. Two beautiful streams cut off by ANTIS As I keep sayin on the Hunting Threads here in URBANIA the Conservationists are the ANTIS. Watch out all you rural folk cause THEY are spreading and our numbers are thinning. Conservationist round here is a word associated with anti hunters and has been for some time now. Was very surprised to see Fishing has been added to their list. True colors

Since you mentionedcold weather, im gonna take this oppurtunity to get back on topic. Another great advantage that comes along with two handed and switch casting is the absence of stripping line in. This really comes in to play in winter months. I often fly fish in cold winter months in the upper river. When using a longer switch or two hander, it is not necessary for me to strip any line in when casting after a drift as my rods can handle large amounts of line out when casting. Long story short; it keeps the guide icing to a minimum...
