..days till the opener. Seems so soon. They say time really starts to fly once you hit 30. Anyone getting prepared and what you doin ? I been shooting a good bit. Haven't been out in the woods too much. Saw a nice buck the other evening. Braved the rattlesnakes to try to find a way to hunt some bucks I suspect to have survived last season. Went in the area and man there are holes in the ground everywhere. Took me 10 minutes to walk 50 yards. LAUGH. Finally got some cams out last week. They are close to fields in my deer's summer range which makes it nice for alot of pics. I checked one Tuesday to make sure it wasn't full of sun pics. 28 pics, 2 sun, the rest deer. Painted some new treestands to keep them away from those two legged critters.

Don't even have time to fish, much less think about hunting right now! Time does move MUCH quicker, esp. when you start closing in on the 40....and you have a couple of munchkins running around....

Been shooting. Getting ready to get some cameras out. Looking for some new spots for some September antlerless action in the SRA. Filming now so it is a whole different game.

I pulled my bow out earlier this week with intentions to shoot and found that the Fiber Optics cracked and broke on two of my pins . I will purchasing a new sight here shortly if I can actually find a decent 3-pin sight. Other than that we have been preparing a field for a first time planting of oats and clover. We have it cut, sprayed, and cleaned up so far and should have it plowed in the next week or two. The soil is pretty rough so we will see what happens. I also just got my camera up this Monday. I am heading out after work today to go check on it. Hopefully I have some good pics to report back with. I will probably start hanging some stands here in the next couple weeks as well. This is about the time of year when I make the transition back over to hunting

Spring dispersal has taken place here ... the three BBs that were here all winter and I had a few pics of starting this year's antlers are gone ... no idea where they were run off to . but I am trying to find some bucks that are new and coming into this area .. so far my cameras are not showing much.. I am seeing fawns in the pasture now just after sundown (looks like two sets of twins) but too dark for pics... Hope to get everything done/ready and start shooting the crossbow this coming week.. still have 5-6 "honey-dos" to complete before I get too busy fall fishing and scouting...

Went out to shoot my bow last night and there was a long legged goofy lookin' fawn standing there 15 yards. Probably a BB. Coulda had some early season jerky. I've been looking into the trees for acorns. Despite not having anything close to a frost this year, the crop doesn't look good here. Alot of the chesnut oaks have oak wilt. Taxidermist has a huge red oak in his front yard. This is only the second year in 37 that it doesn't have acorns on it. The other year it was struck by lightning. I've seen a few red oaks with some, very few, some white oaks but they are very small. I suspect spotty red oaks this year here.

Been shooting a good bit and hitting great. The new bow I bought last year is AWESOME. Was in the woods the other night seen a lot of does and kids. a little before dark the bucks moved threw as usual a couple monsters much like every year. A big racked buck piebald was quite a surprize to see. May have to hold out for a shot at this deer. dave

Hey Doc- right on with the 'Spring Dispersal', they are starting to change now and will continue to do so for a while now as food sources change and fawns get a bit older. Bucks will be running together for a while before getting testy with each other and starting to move and claim territory too. I find that most main trails or consistent bedding areas will continue to be OK for those who get out early and try a setup for those first few days.

Been shooting some as well, especially since just had the bow re-tuned. Hits like it did when it was new. Feels good, just gotta get my stamina up. Got a new target too so now the old one is broadheads only. Heading home next weekend to till for my turnip plot back in the woods. Gotta start this one a little earlier than the other since it doesn't get as much sunlight. Will be checking the cams then too. As long as the batteries held up, we'll have almost 5 weeks of pics to go through. Checking the one in my backyard today. Will post if see the 8 pointer again. Nothing huge, but a definite shooter to me. Almost forgot I have a new treestand to try out as well. Was awarded some gift cards at work this year so was able to stock up on some new toys wouldn't have bought otherwise.

Nope. Hardly anything on the cam all week. Don't blame them. I don't want to do much in this hot weather either.

I walked into a remote and very old apple orchard that very few people know about in a heavily forested area of a DMAP unit, I will be getting permits for, today to see if the trees produced any apples this year. There weren’t a lot of apples, like in some places, but I suspect there are enough to make for some darn good early season archery hunting. It is still a little too early to tell if we are going to have acorns this year but the apples are pretty abundant in this area and I am sure that will pull some deer out of the big woods areas around here. Got an old abandoned Orchard on a State property near my place in upstate NY. Have given serious thought to going in early next year and spraying one tree a time or two right in the middle just to see how it produces-generally they do well there and draw deer during the season but just wanna see what would happen with some help. Probably illegal on the State land though. SSSSHHHHH.

Hung my fifth stand this morning, all in the apples. Haven't seen much oak or cherry yet but really don't start looking at it seriously for another month or so. Shooting 20 arrows a few times a week to get the muscles back in shape. Have seen four small bucks and one nice seven point in the daylight, haven't started spotting yet. Hate to bit-h after the spring we had but we could sure use some rain where I live. Trail camera shows a few small bucks. Retired guy--take a bag of 10-10-10 and a spud bar wih you.

Dang - those pics are dark. Due to the camera being so close to the road and needing good cover, I had to put it low. Flash pointed too low. I lightened the one up.

Got up early today to get some cams. After a brief step outside I went back to bed. If the cams weren't full of pics yet, they will be from the heat and breeze today.
