Carp on top

I have been trying to catch a couple carps from a pond in a local park, and they have been getting the best of me. I have been using dough balls and corn for bait, but no takers. Anyway, I was trying on Saturday, and there was a family reunion there. Some young kids were running around, and they threw about 2/3 of one of those big jugs of cheese balls in the water. After they started to dissolve, it looked like Shark Week. The carps were cruising the surface, sucking in the cheese balls. My plan is to tie up some fluffy Glo Bugs in an Oregon Cheese color, chum with cheese balls, and float a Glo Bug when the feeding frenzy begins. Think it will work? I have been skunked on three previous trips. I was also eying up some floating yellow power bait. Will that work? I'm going to try on Thursday.

At Kinzua I saw fish gulping at the surface and did not know what they were until a carp did that close to my boat.
Very strange seeing them eating bugs on the surface.

You just got a first hand look at how carp chumming works. No need to buy expensive snacks when feed corn, oats, bird seed, etc. will do the same thing.

Use like a quarter of hotdog bun or and tie a circle hook on a fly pole and just like glorified dri fly fishing you catch the ugliest fish but get a heck of a fight on a fly pole. Or you can use a bait pole. Doesnt matter

Try a cashew nut on a small hook (you can use rubber bands - small like for braces) - chum with canned corn!

Round three was the other night, and I was skunked again. Right before it got dark, a carp started sucking the remnants of some cheese curls that I had chummed with. I casted to it, but no good. I recently picked up some orange floating power bait. On the positive side, I caught 5 brown trout on Friday night off the top, one of them 16-17 inches in length. They took a really small Caddis imitation.

One of my best fishing trips I ever had was catching carp off the top, that was back when the locusts were out real bad. Fished the Mon in Morgantown. Those carp were going nuts. They pulled a 12' JOhn boat around all morning
Bout this time of year too, if I remember correctly

White filter material used for air intakes on some motors makes a book bread fly after chumming. Used it with success after you get them excited. Cheese puff super glued to a hook on fly rod will work if your not a purist (which I'm not).

I throw out corn and pieces of bread to chum.  When the carp start to rise, i throw out a big glo-bug in the middle of the bread.  works every time.  Here is a good color...
