Best Erie Charter?

I searched the policies carefully and I think I'm ok posting this, but if there's any issue I understand if the mods must delete. Also, if it is ok and responders would rather PM, that's cool.

I'm looking for opinions on the best Erie charter. I and some friends want to charter a trip for later this summer or early fall for either Walleye or Perch, and none of us has done this before. There will probably be about 5 of us.

Regarding service, price, attitude and ability, can y'all point me to the top choice(s)?

I can't disagree with the plus 1's for Buckets, and certainly wouldn't steer anyone away from them. That said, pretty much any charter up there will put you on fish when they're around. They ( most of them ) work well with each other, sharing info, and fishing the same general area ( cause that's where the fish are. But a charter should, for the money be more than just catching fish. You want a crew that's enjoyable to be around as well.

You will definately find that with Buckets. But this late in the season, booking might be a problem. A few others that I have either fished, or accociated with that will give you an enjoyable ( and most likely successful ) trip are.

Caio charters
dreamcatcher ( adayaway )

All very personable Captain/crews. As well as consistent suuccess on the water.

That makes a lot of sense.  I'd imagine the charter business is one of those business that when its best for all of the businesses to be performing well.

Thanks everybody! Please, keep the opinions coming. Keeping in mind that again, I've never done this; you tip the 1st mate, right? Also, how do you decide how much to tip?

Bomber Charters with Tim Small and his son Steve runs the Small Program.  Can't go wrong with either of them. IMHO, Capt T Small is the best there is.

Agreed with all of the above. Your toughest thing right now might be booking the date you want with any of these guys. My bachelor party in '05 was on Bomber and we had a good time. I used to first mate in HS/college and was able to help out and run some lines. Everyone had a great time as well. His 36' Sportcraft had plenty of room.

If fish are hitting out West and you want more fishing time though, you may want to go with some of the boats that launch out of the nut.

And yes, tip the mate. 10% is usually a pretty fair tip and that is what I used to get when trips were running $400 per day. Good days with fast fishing and quick limits, I got 20-30% tips. Best was a group of "refuse collectors" that worked in NYC and lived in Jersey and had more gold on them than Tupac. Ran to the Ohio line from Presque Isle, had our limit in about an hr (6 guys and bloody decks with fish laying all over the place and several 9+ lbers) and the fellas slipped me 3 $100 bills as I was bagging their fish at the cleaning station.

Salty Dog has treated me great...might be on his boat the weekend.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

I didn't notice anybody responding to your question  re: tipping . If you believe the 1st mate did a good job overall in assisting you , absolutely yes , tip . Amount of the tip is based on service . Just like a waiter/waitress , it's part of their wages .  An extra $10 / person is nothing [ to the fishermen ] considering total cost of the trip , gas , food , the charter itself ... . We generally tip between $10-$20 / person and any mate was appreciative . With 6 guys on a charter , it makes a decent tip . In most cases , every mate [ or food service person ] deserves a tip . It's been a rare occurence in my experiences that someone didn't deserve a tip . Personally , I would rather tip in excess instead of not enough . In cases where the Captain didn't have a mate , we tipped the Captain if he was performing the mates' job . Most fishermen wouldn't do that  , believing the Captain was making enough of a profit . From the reaction of the Captain , him receiving a tip doesn't occur often and once again , it's most appreciated .  I realize that I didn't answer your question directly on an amount to tip , but instead gave you generalities . You can treat it like being in a restaraunt . Tip between 10-15% , but we usually tip mates a higher amount as they don't work year 'round . Hope this helps .

I agree fish5000 and some of the Captains, are running someone else's boat. So they are not making all the money.

My Wife said, if I go fish'n one more time, she'll leave me! God, I'm going to miss her!

I always did well and had a great time with Capt. Terry on Leisure Time Charters many years ago. He doesn't really advertise much...I think he works mainly off of word of mouth, but he always got us on the fish.

seawolf is busiest it seems, always out, sometimes twice a day...
and
you can actually catch fish with the rod in your hand.. instead of trolling and the boat catching the fish...http://www.fishfry.com/

he launches at walnut, which is easy to find if coming from out-a-town..
hope this helps

Ya he drifts right through the middle of 200 boats trying to troll an area...
