Tiny Deer In West Virginia

I went down the West Virginia to hunt Monday.  Marshall county south of Wheeling.  but anyhow, this guy is dragging a deer up the trail, and I wish I had a picture.  it was an 8 point with about a 10 to 11 inch spread but the deer could not have weighed 70 or 75 lbs.  I reached down and picked it up by the antlers with one arm all the way off of the ground.  The hunter told me that he has shot small buck before but this was nuts.  He was going to find a WV Dnr guy because he was concerend that the deer maybe was not healthy.  It was just a funny thing to see.  I've shot spikes that out weighed this 8 by 50 or 60 lbs.  If it was EHD it should have killed him already, the biting midges have been gone for a long time from what I understand.

    Mak,

I just got back from a hunt in WV.  We hunt Wetzel County (New Martinsville)  The deer are a bit smaller, but they are basically mountain deer.

I took probaly the spallest buck out of the group.  It was my 1st hunt on the property so it wasnt too bad.  The bucks was small 8, but it was more like 100-110lbs with very little mass.  If he was 2 years old id be suprised.  I also took a doe about 90lbs.

We had 2 other 8pts shot that were much bigger than mine and 1 nice 6pt that all were 115lb+ decent deer for the area.

We hunt around a nice farm area that is all private land where every1 takes care of the deer herd.  They plant huge food plots for them all over the property to keep them healthly, have ponds put in for water supply and are constantly taking out the coyote to eliminate competition... Because of this they can keep about 2 deer per acre. It is a great area to hunt but the deer are by no means trophy class whitetail.

Heres a pic of my buck...

we were hunting marshall county, the cecil underwood WMA area.  Your buck could have eaten the 8 point that I saw being drug out.  Congrats on a nice deer.  We only go to WV every few years but next year we gotta find some private land.  This public land thing is gettin old.

Well sometimes them young deer sport horns early. As i said above my deer was the smallest buck shot in the 3 days i hunted.  Good enough for me but the place we hunt has some very nice racks roaming around this hilly farm country...
