Cold-Weather Carpin'

So do many people do any carpin' through winter?  Despite what some believe, carp can be caught all thru winter and even thru the ice.

It just doesn't seem like carping unless you are broiling in the sun or being eaten by bugs.  Besides it's way easier to get steelies or walleyes now.

Ah, where's the challenge in that.  I hate fishing of any kind in the heat and I don't hunt, so gotta do sumtin'. You can sweat your (dough)balls or boilies off if ya want, but some of us prefer numb nuts.  The Stillers sure as hell weren't worth watchin' yesterday, but is was an exciting game.  Everybody and their grandmother are after Erie steelhead now.  Pittsburgh steelhead are where it's at!

sure, we  fish all through the winter. for pretty much what we can catch. saturday, at the west branch of the susquehanna at shawville, fishing for channels, we caught a 31" carp. water and air temps were in the low 40's.we've also got some just at ice out in the spring.

Cool.  I've never fished over that far east in PA.  I saw a Walkers Cay Chronicles fishing show several years ago where Flip Pallot and Lefty Kreh were flyfishing the Susquehanna and catching some nice carp.  Hopefully I'll make it over east one of these days and fish the Juniata and Susquehanna and some of the other good carp waters over that way.

a good place to start is , www.curwensvillelakefishing.com, stacy bressler has carp tournaments to help pay for the restocking of the dam, with walleye and such. we're up in the upper part by clearfield, it's not as huge as it is near harrisburg, but still fun fishing.

Some local guys I know insist they get thirties regularly from the warm water discharge at Dunkirk Harbor.  These guys are just about full-time multi-species anglers that I see all over Erie and Ontario.  I am inclined to believe them.

fishing for carp in cool weather can be slow but fun.  Fish do take bail all year.   I unsually pick a "warning-up" cycle,  layer up for the weather and go fishing.

For anyone interested, there is a good carp article titled "Winter Carpin'" in the current issue of Fur-Fish-Game starting on page 23.
