Shooting range observations

Took my annual trip to the range just for fun.  My guns have been sighted in long ago.

Saw a few never put the safety on on thier guns.

Saw a gentleman shooting off of a rolled up sock.

Saw a gentleman shooting off of a tacklebox.

Saw a fellow who had to shoot almost 2 boxes off shells just to get his gun boresighted.

Saw quite a few whose guns must have been on shoot two shells and leave.

Saw a gentleman using two different bullet wieghts while sighting in.

Never saw anyone take some shots from some field postitions.  A bench is great but how about shooting a box offhand from different ranges.  Many would be surprised at the results.  How about leaning from behind a post(like a tree).

To me, getting your rifle hitting the bull from the bench is a small part of the equation.  Being able to hit that same bull in field conditions is the desired goal.

How many shoot thier .22 in the off season for practice, not from a bench.

How many take running shots at deer but have never practiced the same shot at a tire rolling down a hill.

How many know how to use thier sling to tighten up thier offhand groups by half.

I admit, I am no expert marksman but I try every year to get better.  I am always amazed at what I see when I go to the range just before the opener.

The exact reason I spend practially no time in the woods in rifle season.

I know a lot of guys that don't even shoot their guns in, period.  I got kicked out of some private land a few years ago because I shot a nice one.  It was the last day and a drunk ended up missing it, then it came to me.   At the shooting range, he was hitting over a foot high.  Now I'm not allowed there the first week.  Probably a good thing considering there's more beer being drank than steps taken off the beaten path.  The fact of the matter is that a lot of people only hunt the first day.  Since it's only one of 365 days, many don't prepare for it or are not familiar enough with their weapon to even be in the woods.  Not knowing what you're doing is a little dangerous.

    I'll enjoy sleeping.

To add to dpm's post. I dont think a lot of hunters know how to sight in a rifle from a bench, not alone learn to shoot one in hunting situations.

I agree, I agree.  Spend time at the range sure, but go hog hunting, help a farmer and help yourself.  hog hunting does not have to be done from a bench or be a sit and wait sport. when I go, one of us carries a .243 or a .280 and the other a 22 magnum.  we use an old camera tripod as a rest for the long shots (its no better than a tree limb).  Anything inside 100 yards is shot with the 22 magnum and anything longer is for the hi-power.  We walk the tree and fence rows watching and glassing the fields for our shot.  He who sees it, shots it.  Although I do let my boys shoot alot of mine.  It makes you prowd when your 12 year old can lean on top of a fence post and wax a hog at 275 yards with his remington model 788 in .243 win. and It gives him the confidence to take a good shot during deer season.

Sorry, I have a couple of farmers who let me deer hunt because I come all year and keep the whistle pigs from tearing up there fields and fence rows.  Hell they even call me and let me know when they are taking off the hay so I can get there while the grass is short. One property is so polluted with them my son and I shot 12 pigs in 3 hours one evening and I dont think we even hurt the population.

Believe it or not, farmers want rid of them pretty badly and its a good way to get your foot in the door and get to know the land owner.  One farmer would only let us pig hunt, nothing else, and then one day a belt broke on his round bailer and he was struggling with it when I arrived to hunt.  I spent an hour with him helping him repair his bailer.  when we were done he said "you hunt my property any time you want for anything you want and dont think you have to stop in every year and get permission"  but his thread started about rifle ranges....how did we get here.....

Last I knew, you don't shoot your gun to boresight it.  You're right some people don't have a clue.  LOL!

the real bad thing is you try to help someone out by explaining how to sight in a gun, they get all ****y. i watched one guy try to sight his gun in by shooting with his gun in his left hand while his elbow was resting on the bench. the butt of his gun was up against his right shoulder, not on the bench or any support. he kept complaining about the cheap scope. go figure??

As long as the end result is the gun is sighted in and hitting good...why does it matter?

Watched my buddy at the range sighting in his new 7mm Mag.. Didn't even look like fun at all..Those things kick way to hard for me. Personally I think its overkill.. to each his own..
