Outboard Mechanic
Anybody know a good outboard mechanic in Erie? Michalaks says they don't work on my outboard. Anybody have any opinions on Presque Isle Sports? Thanks for your answers.

I don't have much good to say about any marine mechanics that I've run across, with the exception of the folks at Kennerdell near Oil City/Franklin. Hopefully someone will chime in with better news...

See John at PIS. Yes, they're busy, but been doing outboards there forever.

If you take it to Presque Isle Sports you'll be lucky to have it by Labor Day. His people skills absolutely stink. I'll row my boat before I take a motor to him again. I have had service work done at Surf and Turf 4 times. It has never taken more than 3 days. During the boating season, it's worth paying a few extra bucks to be back in business quickly.w_w.
If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

Its a shame that a good marine mechanic is so hard to find these days. Especially with such an absence of jobs today

Good marine mechanics don't advertise for work and are usually backed up for months. I wouldn't touch a rig for under $35 an hour.

If you don't mind a little drive, there's a guy on 193 in Kingsville Ohio, who is really good with mercs. Shop is at his house, and very reasonable.

SURF AND TURF does a good job and fairly quick. I had a few things done there the last couple of years. I bought a new aftermarket outdrive and my gimbal ring was too sloppy, so I had them put on a new one before I put the new drive on. Had them install a reman engine for me last fall. Reasonable price and Jug & Dave do good work. I have gone to PRESQUE ISLE SPORTS a few times over the last 40 yrs. John pretty much grew up in the business. He will really help you out, if he can. I brought my boat up for the season one time and forgot the rod that goes from the end of the trim cylinders thru the outdrive.(I had the outdrive off at home to put in a new gimbal bearing.) I Put the outdrive in back of the truck and was going to put back on in Erie, because I needed gaskets. I left the rod laying on my wall.) He didn't have a new one but went out in his yard and took one off an old boat he had and told me to use it and bring it back when I got mine. He knows his stuff, but he needs more help because like someone said, you can't be in a hurry. MICHALAC MARINE also did some work for me and I was satisfied. The problem is we all want it done FAST and so does the 100 other customers.
My Wife said, if I go fish'n one more time, she'll leave me! God, I'm going to miss her!
