Is it time yet?

Just wanted to start something on here...

I am starting to get the itch really really bad already...Had the dog out doing some swimming the other day and a goose decided to swim within 30 yards of us...my dog just sat there and had a staring match with it for 10 mins then looked at me like "can I get him now?"  He just turned one and already knows if they are that close and on the water he is supposed to get them...lol

Anyone else getting the itch bad?

    I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Yup, every couple days I try to figure out in my head how many days till early goose.  Been hunting turkeys kind of half heartedly here and there the past few weeks, but sure do miss duck hunting.

Looks like some great goose reproduction rates this spring around my house anyway.  One little pond that usually only has one nesting pair and maybe 4-6 goslings has 3 nesting pairs and around 20 goslings.

I can't wait to pound those Ohio corn feed geese in Sept. I seldom hunt after that early season. I just don't know what to do with all of them. But I did come up with a killer recipe for goose breast the other night.Trim all the silver skin off two breast, pepper(corse black pepper) the breast heavy and coat with garlic salt,I used a cast iron fry pan with a couple of table spoons of oil .I cooked them 5 mins. on each side, with the heat set on 5 on are eletric range. In a sause pan 1 cup of dry table red wine,1 teaspoon of beef boulion and 3 heaping tablespoons of blueberry jam. Reduce till in thickens or add a little cornstarch disolved in cold water first and add to thicken the sauce. Remove the breat from the pan(or they will keep on cooking, let them rest 3 or 4 mins, and slice them arcoss the breast( they should be nice and pink in the middle)plate and drizzle some of the sauce over them.I'm not the biggest fan of cooked goose but this was killer. Most of our birds are breasted and smoke or made into hot sticks.

It all depends on what they are eating...early season birds shot out of oat fields are cooked like a steak on the grill...other then that most birds are made into jerky or hot sticks and some are made into a stew type meal...

taking the dog out tomorrow for some swimming/training...he's getting more antsy then me ...every time a  flock flies over he sits and watches then looks at me like "why didn't you shoot?"...guess the waterfowl bug got him too...darn that bug!!!

Been seeing some pretty big amounts of goslings also. It shouldnt be too hard to kill some geese the first couple weeks of September this year. Lots of dumb babies will be in the air. It also seems like there are alot of big goslings for this time of year. The conditions must have been OK for them this spring and they got an early start. One pair in particular have goslings that started getting their cheek patches a couple weeks ago already.

I think its been a bad year.  Normally I see already 2 groups of goslings by now.  I think the long winter and then all that rain hurt the nesting.

Ive always been interested in goose hunting but never got the chance to get into it. I was wondering if anybody here would be interested in taking out 1 or 2 younger guys. We dont got decoys and not to good with calls but would be glad to get a chance out in the field and maybe learn a few things. Shoot me a p.m if anybody would like to help us out. Im located in Lawrence county will be able to drive to pymy or whereever need be thank you. Dan

Made myself some new "jewelry" that will double as a lanyard come season...  It has 2 regular bands and a $100 money band (the one regular band is the one that came with the money band), and added in the swivels to make it easily removable plus adding some fishing into it...I hate this time of year cause it goes SOOOO SLOW!!!

    Frost,

I have a camp at Pymie but have never hunted the early season for geese. Are you permitted to hunt the lake and surrounding area?

Check your regulations some areas are open, some closed. Easier to follow the regulations and print them out  than try to explain it in a post.

Yes you are permitted to hunt the lake and surrounding area.  On the lake and within 100yds of the lake you are permitted 3 birds/day and 6 in possession.  Outside of the 100yds from shore you are permitted 1 bird/day in the Pymatuning zone (they list the actual roads that make up the zone).  Hartstown swamp is closed for the early season.  The management fields are closed as well during the early season.

As spg said, look at the regs for yourself so you know for sure, but what I just posted is the basics.

Thought this would be a great year, based on what I was seeing early spring with the hatches. Very few geese around my usual spots compared to past years. Last year was kind of down as well. Looking at resident population estimates, there's been a pretty steady decline in numbers for the past 3 or 4 years in PA's resident populations. Not huge dips, but down.

I enjoy goose hunting, but not enough to drive hundreds of miles looking for 'em.

I keep tabs on some local birds in a few different places. Seems like they're still in smaller groups, sometimes flocking up, sometimes not.

Oh well, I'll be down the road a mile on Thursday morning regardless, set up on a little pond surrounded by freshly cut alfalfa on one side and freshly cut timothy and clover on the other. There's been handfulls hitting there off and on the past week or so. Probably won't lay the smack down, but should get the chance to get some shooting.

I,ve seen quite a few at Pymy but very few at Shenango.
The decline has been going on now for the past 4 yrs.
Not seeing near the geese flying over the house.
May have to hit Linesville area.lol
