12-Year-Old Captures State Record Muskellunge

Mercersville, Md. April 29, 2011

Twelve-year old Kenneth Files of Falling Waters, West Virginia talked his father into taking him
fishing in the Potomac River on the evening of April 14th. When they arrived just below Dam
#4 they found that the River was in a flood stage (22-feet) and the river banks and property
adjacent to the river were wet with flowing waters. Undaunted, Kenneth spotted an eddy and
began to cast a large white plastic grub lure into the stained waters. Soon a large fish took the
bait and a long tussle commenced.

Files eventually steered the fish into shallow water where he and his dad realized they had
a huge muskellunge. Father and son went straight to the Maryland Fishing Challenge Award
Center at Wolf’s On the Square in Williamsport to register the fish, which measured 45 inches
long with an astounding girth of 24 inches. After getting an approximate weight, it appeared
that the fish could be a Maryland state record. Files iced the fish and went in search of a
certified scale.

A state-certified scale at a local feed and grain store registered the fish’s weight of 31.75
pounds, more than three pounds heavier than the current state record of 28 pounds and one
quarter ounce set by Matt Beal in 2004 in the Upper Potomac.
Maryland Department of Natural Resources biologist John Mullican verified the fish species
and the weight. According to Mullican, “The waters of the upper Potomac River support
a vibrant, self-sustaining muskie fishery that has gained popularity with anglers. With the
success of the pure-strain muskie, tiger muskies have not been stocked since 2006, and few of
the sterile hybrids remain. Muskies are sometimes referred to as ‘the fish of a thousand casts’.
Anglers typically fish for many hours to catch one. Kenneth's record muskie was a female
estimated to be 11 years old.”

To keep on top of the fishing action in Maryland, check in online with the DNR’s Angler’s Log
and weekly fishing reports— www.dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/log.
