long shaft outboard

Can you use a long shaft outboard on a boat that only needs a short shaft outboard ? Thanks for any replies

    Yes you can, it would not be as efficient. Also you could not go in as shallow of water with the motor down.

    You could shim the motor up an inch or two to help reduce the negitives of having long shaft on short shaft boat.

    I used one for years on a small boat, only thing I can remember as a negative was a little "spray" around the motor while on plane. It was a 12 foot boat with a 9.9 evinrude long shaft. If you have the option get the short shaft, if you already have the long shaft use it...

    The trick for good performance is to get the anti-cavitation plate even with the bottom of your hull. Its no big deal, I used a long shaft on a short transom for several years. Good luck.

    Thanks for all the info guys . The reason i was asking is my short shaft is down but i have a long shaft running , But a friend of mine said you couldn't use a long shaft on a short shaft boat, It's only for 1 or 2 times , 9.9 on 12' boat Thanks again

    I don't think you'll notice much difference, unless you're in shallow water.

    Just use it and stay a little deeper. If you want to go more permanent with it, you can always install a jackplate.
