Brown Trout

Where in Erie would the best place to catch a brown trout be? I have heard that people catch them in Elk and 20 mile, but where do you think the best bet is? What would be a target bait to use, sucker spawn, eggs??

Thanks in advance

I have seen a few in the project waters on Walnut.  The one I caught this fall hit a woolly bugger.

The browns come up with the steelhead, or do they come up later on in the season?

There are not a lot of brownies around, and most that I have seen have been in the early season.  A fellow Wednesday morning told me he caught one last week.  I would think there will be a few around, but if you are really looking for browns, you would be better off to go to New York.

Caught one about 20" last week on an oregon cheese sucker spawn. Made about 20 drifts through the same pocket before that cast with white egg sacks, hooked a steelhead on most of those casts. Changed for giggles, first fish was a brown.    Came un-glued right at the bank.

I've seen probably about a dozen different browns in Elk this year, only one I've managed to hook.  Witness two others caught about 6lbs, rest were just cruising around out there, most were around 5 or 6lbers, a couple probably went 8.

That's bert's dam duud  (Burt dam, 18mile creek).  No secret there, think lower walnut creek, but with a dam that the fish can't get by. Generally has about the same numbers of fish as walnut, maybe not quite, but they are a mixture of browns, steelhead, coho, and chinook. Same, if not more yahoos too. It has it's days.

Probably caught it on a wooly bugger, or some ugly version of it that flashpants ties. They'll bite all the same stuff that stockie browns and steelhead will bite. Not always easy though, lots of leadchuckers up there running them around.

I don't think there's a particular place in Erie where the browns go.  I've seen them caught in all streams, even the smaller ones.  I've caught them in the lake too, in January.   You can catch them from the shore in the summer too but it's strictly about wind direction here.  Very hit or miss.   I've also seen them run 50-60 miles upstream, something that was surprising.  So it seems, they return to stocked streams in better numbers.  Whether they return to the stream they were stocked at, nobody knows.  It's usually an early season thing, perhaps around mid Oct - late November.  I've done best on them at the end of October but I don't think you can target them.  Just too inconsistent to think "I'm gonna go catch a brown today."  Although, they do tend to chill out together.  If there is one around, there will be others.  I've seen pod numbers in the teens.  It's a nice surprise catching one in Erie.  Head north as others have suggested if you're looking to really get into them.  I've caught two really nice ones in Erie, one being a pig double digit fish but most are smallish.  I've done best on white SS for them.  Probably more about right place right time thing though.

    Justin,

I saw the biggest brown caught at 16 mile so far this year had to have been close to 30 inches 8 lbs.  16 mile is a sewer creek, but like everyone else has said I have seen them mixed in with the steel in just about any ditch there is, its anyones guess. My buddies little brother caught one that was really silvery last year.  I saw a hefty one swimming around real early season on the east side, but Ive only seen two so far this year, one in the water, one out on a stringer it was a shame cuz it was so beautiful i'd imagine a big'gun made his way out to the lake from the stockings of some creek in Erie.  Its a shot in the dark but it would be a nice suprise.   Why doesn't erie just stock browns??
