JIGGING FOR EYES

On the fishing shows, alot of the walleye are caught jigging. Talked to a few people here in Erie and they all said this technique doesn't work in the Lake. I can see later on in the summer when they're so deep you have to downrig/Pboards, but why wouldn't jigging work in shallower water starting now and for the next month or so. Bought a St. Croix Eyecon walleye rod in a baitcaster to specifically target eyes in this manner. Like to drift walleye rigs with crawlers early on and figure I'll throw some jigs while I'm at it. Any thoughts on this?

jigging is very popular in spring on the reef complexes in the western part of the lake.

It's not that you can't catch 'eyes by jigging on the Central/Eastern basins...it's just that trolling or drifting will be far more productive. Also, jigging is the most effective when the fish are relating to the bottom. This largely goes away way before the dog days of summer. After the spawn, they will be relating to the forage base...period. This forage base may be on the bottom (ie perch), but more often they will be suspended.

Drop a jig with a crawler to the bottom in 30 ft of water and a gobie will clean your hook faster than you can blink here in Erie.

I see no problem in jigging for walleyes in the central basin. The reason people troll is to cover the vast amount of water. If you can find some structure with fish holding on it by all means send one down. just a helpful tip. the deeper the water or the faster you are drifting the heavier the jig. And try all different colors and depths. Try to stay verticle and keep the line under the boat if you are drifting. More control and better feel that way. Good luck

Jigging will work for walleyes anywhere. Whoever told you that was either pulling your leg or just a hardcore narrow minded troller.... like me. lol

Trolling is a great way to find and catch eyes. But once you find them you can do good jigging. They wander though so the trick is to stay on them. When we're dragging dipsies in the summer there are always boats parked right on our trolling routes. Alot of the time they are netting fish as we drive by. This is anywhere from 20 to 70 feet of water too.

Jigging catches most anything if you know how to do it for that time of year and have the right gear.

If you get on a school of Erie eyes like the one in front of Conny last year you could be done in 1/2 hour. Not too hard to stay on a school that's a couple miles wide.

    Good luck.

Bottom Line....For most, in these parts, its a meat run and guys aren't really concerned with the "sport" of it. Absolutely, jigging will produce fish once you find them. Trolling is by far, more effective in filling the box quicker since more water is being covered in a shorter amount of time and thats why more people are doing it. Odd though, in all the years of perchin', I've never once caught a walleye in my boat?

Because the perch eat your bait too fast...

Lots of times I'll start my trolling run around the perch pack, works most of the time...

I got one eye in all the years I perch fished, late Sept. off the point 68 fow 7.5 lbs on a perch spreader, bottom hook.I thought I hade a big sheepie.Only one since the late 70's. I got sick off banging smally's one day in late May fishing the north pier before going out to the lake, and trolled tots in front of the Hammer mill and slammed a two man ticket of eyes 18-21 inches in less than 2 hours, and never caught them again there.

I also have hooked & landed a 26inch walleye perch fishin, 2 years ago on the perch rig.of course i was on a head boat.that much bait should attract something.have seen about 5 eyes hooked by perch fishermen on that boat....over 5 years.

We very often troll just outside the perch packs successfully. Have even perched after wrapping up the eye rods and end up tossing back a couple eyes that came on perch rigs rigged with shinners. More common than you might think.
