morel mushrooms

Absolutely. With all the rain and warm weather its been a really good year, right now is the peak. Get out now or you might miss out altogether. Everyone i talk to is finding them, and in good numbers. We found 2 plastic shopping bags full the first day of gobbler in greene Co.. Also a decent amount of buggy and dead ones.

any good advice on areas to look for them. and i am not asking for your spot.  do they like fields woods dry wet.  and how do you tell the difference between the good and bad ones

How do you guys usually cook yours?

I eat mine most often split lengthwise and after thourough soaking overnight & cleaning, they get dipped in egg and rolled in seasoned bread crumbs then fried for a short time till start to get brown.

They can be found in different areas, but for me, most of my best spots have one thing in common and its something i look for in new woods where i might wanna find them....groves of poplar trees. Probably 80% or better of those i find are around tulip poplars. Even though i might miss some, nowadays its pretty much all i look for. Find the poplars, find the morels. I just go through and check around all the poplars i can, keeping an eye out in between though. Poplar are easy to tell by their bark. You can scan around in the distance and see where they are and beeline from one spot with them, to the next. They dont necessarily grow up close against the tree, though at times do. Just as often out away from them a ways several feet or more.

Ive found them in Western Fayette co. As well as Central Greene county so far this year.

I edited my post before i saw your last one katfishin. Hopefully it might help some. Learn what poplar trees look like, the trunks and bark. They are pretty recognizable once you know what to look for. Best bet would be to get someone who knows what they look like to show you first hand. Its really worth the effort if you plan to hunt morels.

The can be also found around dead elm and at times other species. Live poplar are much more common, easy to recognize and find and you'll find more shrooms if you key on poplars because of those reasons.

Boil them

Why do you boil morels first?? I know people boil sheephead and others at times, but thats because they are a bit tougher shroom. Morels are extremely delicate. Fry them for a very short time and they are almost instantly soft, the caps anyway. Slightly less so the stems, but not bad.

False morels are fairly common in SWPA. The edible morels; half free, gray, yellow and gaint morels, all have hollow stalks Verpa(a species of false morel)are often found growing in and amongst morels. Having a long stalk simlar to the half-free morel,they look nothing like a morel, but could confuse a newbie,I suppose. Cut the stalk lengthwise, if there is a cottony pith, leave it be. The confier morel, looks more like a morel than the verpa, however the stalk is is chambered and has its name suggests grows on conifers.

they're everywhere here in fayette-nam. my mom picked a 30 gal garbage bag full of them from around her house and never made a dent in them. gonna get some for myself tonight.

That's a morel.  As long as they look like that and are hollow your ok.
