South Hills Area Trout Fishing
Looking to go out Sunday morning wondering if I'd have better luck at Canonsburg Lake, Mingo Creek, Chartiers Creek, or Peters Creek. I haven't tried for trout this part of town before so any advice would be much appreciated. I've also only gone for trout a few times so any tips on what has/hasn't been working would be appreciated as well.

My only advice i can give you is this. If you go to canonsburg lake it could be hit or miss (but with you wanting to go on a sunday it could also be a lil packed-so go definately early) Plus if you do decide to go to canonsburgh, you also have little chartiers creek which begins right over the breast of the dam (and it is stocked as well) at canonsburgh, so here you actually have 2 options. Mingo, now although i haven't been there in yrs, i always remember it being very, very shallow (although i heard you can find some holes IF YOU EXPLORE) & it gets fished out relatively quickly (unless you know the stream & where the holes are). And peters, although my favorite, if you've never been there b4 you of course won't know the stream, therefore you will be doing alot of exploring & walking because it is full of holes, but again, the only way to find em is to explore. Just my tad of advice in a nutshell, gl on not only your choice but your trip in general.

All mentioned suck. Unless you are in need of a pellet head fix, close to home, I personally avoid them all. With exception to Peters, they all take about 30-45 minutes to get to for me. There are a ton of better options that are an extra 20-30 minutes away for trout or other species. Peters takes about 10-15 minutes for me, but is a sewage ditch. I'd consider on par with the rivers, minus the big fish. If you have a full day, head out east to the Laurel Highlands or north to a few other streams/lakes that aren't sewage infested. Just my 2 cents...

Great information so far guys. I'm not looking to make a day out of this. Just looking for a few spots I can hit up for a couple hours that doesn't require much of a drive(I live in finleyville). I might try to squeeze some time in tomorrow as well as sunday.

Well then, with that being said, i'd go for canonsburg because again you'd have the "two" options there, either the lake OR little chartiers creek just below the dam. You could give the lake a lil whirl & if nothing happens worthwhile you then could go below the dam & fish little chartiers (or vice a versa).

I'm so sick of all this rain. I ended up not making it out last weekend between the rain the having to catch up on some yard work. I may try getting out tonight or tomorrow night.

I've heard the weather is going to keep being more of the same until the 15'th or so.

With all the nice weather we've had the past 4-5 days I imagine a lot of people would have been out. With all the crappy weather we've been having I imagine there'll be quite a few trout left still.

thinking of taking the kids to Chartiers creek below Cannonsburg lake, anyone know if it's brown? I was out of town all week and heard we had some heavy rains. Anyone go by there yesterday or today?

Oh yeah its brown. Chocolate brown. Just like the lake is gonna look like when the water gets a little warmer and the ten billion little carp start rootin around in the silt for food.

About the only thing you could do for this lake right now would be to start a stale bread stand in the parking lot and rent pellet guns to folks to let them have some fun feedin and shootin.
