    furry friend?

i wouldn't trust someone under the age of 14 on a rustbelt steelbow stream... let alone a dog

    foul hook?

    nope
with that fly and the way its fished... really not possible
in that pic the hook is backwards... but for sure inside and legit

Looks outside from here...exactly in what special way is it fished that makes it impossible for a foul hook?

    run was a fast outside
    skagit double at about 70degrees
fast upstream poke-mend of the back of the head while staying tight
swung mid in the column with a hard grab that took the loop on the eat

i was just curious because you can see the whole shank of the hook on the outside at least an inch away from corner of the jaw.

Things happen; I don't think anyones holding it against you kj... by looks of the down stream direction and the hook completely on the outside it probably was flossed... but anyway, it looks like you had a great day. Good to see people getting out while most assume the seasons over... great job...

that fish was not flossed... it moved up in the column to eat a swung fly

    i mentioned fly design
swing a short shank octopus hook on shank style flies will leave the body of the fly out of the mouth
notice the corner placements of the hooks

if i would have held this fish as the one from monday... it would look the same
but this fish was hooked more towards the front

if held out out the water, the hook and fly would have also dropped, probably around the jaw bone for a look similar to the original picture

it happens when a fish makes a swipe and doesn't fully connect, causing your set to be in the corner making it look foul, but it's not.

no worries... you can see how on the first pic of the ones from today, the hook pulled and twisted some skin
thats how some fish are lost... by breaking that hook-in point or loosing tension and the hook falls out

you can see the skin is twisted... in that case it was a full twist... making the hook point the correct direction

in the orinigal, the twisting made the hook face opposite

Back in the day when I worked at a sports shop near Raystwon, we sold trout for bait to the striper anglers.  I often fed the trout dying minnows and observed how they struck them.  While the takes were always aimed at the head of the minnow, many times the trout did not get the entire minnow in its mouth, particularly if is was a quick swipe at the bait, and half of the minnow would be hanging out of the trout's mouth until it decided to burp it up and try again.  Sometimes they swam around for half a minute like that.

Since a streamer more often than not imitates a baitfish, it is not unusual for a trout, steelhead, or whatever, to aim for the head and not get the entire fly in its mouth.  The portion that would be hanging out is the part containing the hook point.  In other words, the fish struck the fly, but was hooked outside of the mouth from an outside in direction simply because of the way the fly was taken.

what flows were you fishing in (cfs)?

    what kind of head/system?

nice fish btw... i see you're busting out the olympus! still can't believe nikon gives you shutter, apert, etc. and the olympus did not, however, for underwater pics, the olympus is far out.

    Jim-
the nut gauge was at just over 100 that day
    its a 10.5' 4/5wt 18' SA skagit extreme head with 6' of T-10
those pictures are a mix of nikon and olympus

    Dar
while i totally agree on fish attacking the head of a streamer, it is different when fishing a tight line swung fly
the fish doesn't see the front of the fly... at most maybe only 20* of the fly from behind... the movement and look of materials from the rear perspective is what gets the fish
thats why the hook placement is so far back... the eats come from the rear

Thanks for the explanation Kevin.  I did not know that.

My point was more broad, not all fish hooked outside of the mouth, irrespective of method, are flossed.

    kev,

would you say the same happened with this fish?? I only had a 4 ft. section, not sure the size, but the fish def. hit this fly at the end of the swing.. it was no "floss"

if you throw a bend in your belly, you can present a broad sided fly... which will get that head eat

but, with the fly i was fishing, a broad side presentation would push the materials the wrong way and have the hook way out of the strike zone
with stringer hooks, I'm sure I've had eats that where not in the hook and the fish swiping cause the hook to set outside of the mouth....
but i would say that all these fish come unbuttoned before that can be landed
