Fished upper Elk looking for stockies on a fly and managed to get 5 steelhead and 0 stockies. Creek was almost blown-out from the rain. Fished the tail-out from a large pool. Got all on white minnow patterns.

So you can keep 5 steelies in the spring according to the regs, correct ? They need to change that, I've been saying that for years. If you have a cool spring, like we've had, the steel numbers can be better than average in April. Plus if there are any jacks in there people will keep them as well. I know they only stock browns in Erie tribs for spring, but 5 is too many to rope and smoke !

No. Steelie limit is three. Combined limit is 5 fish. I caught and released 5 steelhead. No sense in killing any more when I still have one in the freezer.

No. Steelie limit is three. Combined limit is 5 fish. Jeb was correct, the steelhead limit is now 5 until September 5'th. The regulations say 5 combined species (2 of which may be lake trout). The combined limit was only 3 fish up until trout started. I hope other anglers aren't hauling out 5 steelies at a time from upper elk in trout season. The PFBC probably figures some people would have a hard time distinguishing a very small Steelhead from a large rainbow or something. http://www.fish.state.pa.us/fishpub/summary/lakeerie.html

They dont stock rainbows any more, in any creek that washes out into lake erie. Browns and chromer smolts only. I never said that they stock rainbows, but do you think everyone fishing the Erie tribs on the first day of trout knows that? Maybe it's not the reason, but why else would they let the limit of Steelhead increase to 5 after opening day?

But I think the reason the limits changes to what the regular spring limit is that the PAFBC figures most steelies will be back out in the lake in mid April. But with the cool weather we had this year , there are still fish in the creeks. The reg should be changed to three fish in Erie tribs year round, steelies or stocked brown pellet heads. You can still rope & smoke 5 steelies in April, maybe not as easy as in the fall, but I've caught plenty of steel in April. Just my thoughts !
