Warm enough for Smallmouths?

Have a chance to fish the Bay from the shore this weekend, but I hate to spend the money on gas if it's to early. Anybody having any luck with Smallmouth in the bay, or am I rushing the season?

OK, thanks for the info. I guess I'm just rushing the season. Anxious to get back out there.

Don't get me wrong...you can catch LM and other fish in the shallower parts of the bay....prolly just not smallies...at least not in any #'s yet.

It's not viagra. It is the active ingredient in prozac: the antidepressant.  Actually, water tests are starting to show traces of many other pharmaceuticals in all the Great Lakes and other bodies of water around the country.  The problem is that the waste water treatment systems that are currently in operation are not designed to remove them from the waste water that is produced by our ever growing population.  It doesn't help that people think the proper way to dispose of old medication is to flush it down the toilet.  Just think what this soup of drugs is going to eventually do to the fish and their ecosystem...

Some have been around the South and North piers like most of the year but its way to early to make a trip for them. The bite has been respectable at best on a swim jig

Last year at this time the smallmouth were in and biting good and that was in water temps in the 45-50 degree range. This year, not so much. Water just needs to warm a little more.

First weekend of May is when I always starting catching the smallies. Then again, first weekend of May is always when I started fishing for them. When the temp on my depth finder reads 52 degrees, that's when I start catching the smallies.
