Lampreys in Yough

Fishing Monday near Smithton Hooked and landed a18 inch Palomino with a 6 inch lamprey on its back. Tried to contact fish commission but have not heard any thing back Wondering if any one else has seen any on fish. Have fished the river 50 years and never saw one .

Freshwater lampreys are native to the area and are not harmful to the environment. Some are candidate and threatened specied too, IIRC.

I caught one while trout fishing a few years back in a small stream and have seen several others.

I also so one this year for the first time on a 41" musky. I got a pic of the fish but the lamprey fell off when I had the fish in the net. Kinda strange that no one has seen them before and now 2 showed up already this year.

I have the one in the freezer It was hooked to the trout had to give a good yank to get it loose so it was a parasitic type. Strange to just start seeing them'

Caught an Eye last fall on the Allegheny at Kittanning.
When I went to fetch the fish from the cooler at home to clean it, there was a Lamprey half way out of the fishes gullet.
Aprently the lamp was dinner for the eye and it hadn't died by the time we caught the Walleye...so it tried to get out after the fish died in the cooler!

    Weird stuff right there!

A friend of mine who was fishing over there, must've talked to you when you got the the fish and Lamprey.  He mentioned it to me yesterday in a passing conversation.  He also said they seen an inmature bald eagle cruising the river.

gamefish are usually too active for a lamprey to get a good hold...I usually find them more on suckers, drum and carp, but ive seen lots of bass and walleye with that wierd little circle scar.
