golden shiners
Was talking to a guy at mammoth lake last week who said he caught a few golden shiners on corn while trout fishing. Anybody else ever see these in that lake or Anywhere else local for that matter? Would love to catch some for bait just lookin for some tips. You can't use. A minnow trap in this lake as it is trout stocked. And I'm assuming a trap w a one inch opening is too small anyway.

I saw a lot of golden shiners in there around 20-25 years ago. They were around 5-7" long. There were a lot of big bass in there then too.

Used to catch them 30 years ago fishing for bluegill at Kooser. They were in that 5"-7" range. Don't know if they're still there or not.

THEY ARE STILL IN kOOSER & Mammoth & most other lakes around this area. Have caught them in Northmoreland,Acme Dam etc. they fight pretty well for thier size when we catch them on jigs. sam

just a wax worm a small hook works well to catch them wax worms are soft and somehow stay attached to the hook well and the shiners bite down and thats it for them. Also try little creeks in your area i always find alot of them in the creeks that run out of keystone

Once trout season opens and you can get near the outlow at donegal you can catch them there or at the pipe right down from the dam aswell. But, those things are everywhere... Even out in Somerset lake, caught about 6 or 7 of them last year in about a one hour period...

I love those giant wild goldies, great big bass bait and great pike bait. One of the lakes I ice fish has some big 6-8 plus inches, every time we get one jigging through the ice we put it out on a tip-up and they almost always get bit.I'll freeze them and use as deed bait for pike if they don't get eaten that day.I was thinking about putting in a back yard pond just to raise some over size wild goldies, the ones at the bait store are quite small and pale in color as too the wild ones.

I believe that you can use a minnow trap once Trout season opens. I would think that you would need an aereator to transport any number of them, because they seem fragile to me. I was told by a Fish Commisioner that one of the reasons that they made Mammoth a big bass lake was because of the numbers of large Golden Shiners in there, for food for the bass. sam ORIGINAL: FishinGuy Was talking to a guy at mammoth lake last week who said he caught a few golden shiners on corn while trout fishing.
