Windlass thoughts

Thinking of buying a windlass for my boat (before I sell it ) I'm looking at the Lewmar 700 series. Any thoughts about the free fall vs power down? I did put one on my dads boat last year, it's the 550 and is power down and has worked well. Are there any advantages to the free fall?

Ive had both, only problem with a freefall is the anchor sometimes gets tangled with the chain on the fall, I definitely like the power down better, also a vertical works better than a horizontal as the gypsy grips the rope/chain 180 degrees before entering the rope locker, a horizontal only has 90 degrees of grip, you will notice a major difference when the rope to chain trasition enters the gypsy, vitually no skip or slip , disadvantage is you need a deeper locker as the windlass mounts thru the deck into the rope locker

Thanks bluntman, the power downs are about $100 cheaper so that's another plus. Not sure I have enough room in the locker for the vertical tho.

I bought a Windlass over the winter. An Anchorlift Dolphin 1,000 model (vertical).I think my anchor locker will have enough room. When I was looking, they had some that had up/down button that if you held down for about 4 seconds then it would free fall. I thought that would be great, if I was perch fish'n by myself (which I love to do once in a while.) and didn't have to leave my seat. But, I figured I would have some kind of safety chain or something on the anchor (incase rope would break underway) and would have to go up and remove anyhow! so while up front I could loosen clutch for freefall. I could power down or power up from helm switch. The only thing about powering down, wouldn't you be wa-a-a-y past where you want to anchor by the time the anchor hit bottom, in say 80ft? I also have to make a bow pulpit. I have to make one, because I have seen the price of some of them.

My Wife said, if I go fish'n one more time, she'll leave me! God, I'm going to miss her!
