Allegheny River trip?
I'm thinking of trying a change of pace and booking a drift trip on the trophy trout section of the Allegheny.
Just wondering if anyone has any comments, pro or con about it.
Not looking for any secret spots, just an overall idea of what to expect if I go.
Looks like winter is supposed to be prime for browns?

I took the float trip this time of year 4 years ago. i went because i wanted to see the rest of the river. we caught a decent brown but the big ones dont come every trip.
water is way too high right now but the guide was excellent and i really enjoyed it.

I've seen alot of nice fish taken wading. no cost, easy access, effective... take your $100 and come up three times, instead of paying the guide. Time in the water = a much better chance at getting a trophy brown. ------ so I suppose this would be one con; plain and simple expense  if there's any questions about where to go and what to do there are tons and tons of people on this forum (and elsewhere) that know how to catch a trophy brown below the dam. ------ also as I guy who does fish the winter, I'm not sure I'd say the winter is "the time" for trophy brown. Metabolism is low. I've seen more in the fall, when they Prepare for the winter. just like elsewhere; time on the water, and using an effective & appropriate approach gets you the big fish.

Where exactly is the trophy trout section of the river, and what are the regulations there? I'd like to give it a shot this spring.

Check water levels before yu taka a trip in the near future. Looks like it will be 6' higher than normal for about the next week.

"Advanced hydrologic prediction service Pittsburgh" search will give you river level charts for the Ohio river watershed (Allegheny river is a part of the Ohio river watershed) and a map of western PA where you can click on water gages that show history as well as predicions of water levels.

Hey nysteelieguy,
Your post caught my attention because I used to fish for Big Browns when I lived north of NYC. I was most successful in the Fall... Mianus River, CT, Cross River reservoir, and especially below the **** on Croton Falls Reservoir. My arms were wasted taking Browns on wet flies below the **** in the no admittance area. That was back in the 60's... today is now... Spring... and I'd bet you can still be successful!
If you can afford a guided trip.. do it! Several years ago, I paid a guide for half a day on Lake Erie tribs and learned more from him than I had in the previos 10 years on my own! You may not take a Big Brown... but you will learn alot for the Fall!

I've caught many big browns on the Ontario tribs. This is specifically about the Allegheny River and learning some new water.
