Peters Creek Question
I was wondering if there are any other fish species in peters creek, near bethel and south park, other the the stocked trout. Smallmouth bass, carp, bullhead, pickerel, sunfish, etc? Also wondering, where in peters creek do they plan to stock the trout?

They stock more in South Park since SP started throwing $ in. I've caught carp, suckers, saugers, and seen channel cats there. Seemed like they didn't stock much last year it was pretty lame fishing and they were smaller fish. Smaller and smaller every year, 10 years ago 18-20 inchers were common. I'm still a member, figure my donation add 3-5 fish a year to the mix. Remember we promote catch and release, a lot of kids enjoy that stream. If you see someone throwing them on shore like 3 years ago say something! Besides all the **** in that stream there not good! Good luck.

The water is clearer then it was a few years ago. I have seen many queen snakes in it recently, and they require pretty clean water. I havent seen them downstream of the water treament plant though. I hope they invest more time and $ in it, it has potental. I'm only 13, I didn't even know there were fish other than suckers and chub in it until last summer. I just usead it as a "tromping" area.

Any reason why the fish keep getting smaller DJ? I am graduating from Penn State and returning to Finleyville, so I am leaving fly fishing heaven and descending into trout fishing...well, not heaven. You guys would have my money if I could get into some decent(15"+) trout from april-nov. Minus the summer months of course. I should probably join anyways. Where do you guys meet and how much are dues?

Been fishing the stream for about 15 yrs now, and i've caught trout, carp, chubs, sheephead, bluegills, bullheads, smallmouth & a very rare (occasional) largemouth plus some channel cats, and a cpl yrs ago even some mooneyes & small white bass & saugers. Depends on location, structure & time of year of course. But overall, it seems the "predominant" species are the trout, carp, chubs & sheephead. If your looking for some small stream smallmouth action it seems that further downstream, on the other side of rt 51 they are a lil bit more plentiful & numerous. No doubt maybe due to the fact that the lower stretches are closer to the mon. And i will agree that last year & i can't remember for sure or not but possibly the previous year as well that the trout were ALOT smaller, typical pelletheads. Last time i ran into some larger nicer trout up at peters was at least a cpl yrs ago. And they definately have seemingly started stocking more "upstream" than where they traditionally have in previous yrs.

Is there any smallmouth bass action within 1 mile up or downstream of the water treatment plant? Also, where have you caught carp or bluegill?

Also wondering, are there any areas where the creek runs off into a ditch or is dammed up to make a small pond?

A pond or pool would probably be more likely to have smallmouth bass, sunfish, bullhead, pickerel, etc.

The smallmouth are basically spread throughout the stream, but as i stated i've gone down on the other side of rt. 51 a few times & caught more of them down there. Theres a nice deep run basically right below the bridge that crosses 51 & i pulled quite a few of them out down there using fatheads. The carp, there widespread too, find a hole (of which there are many) and most likely you'll find some carp, the bigger the hole the better. Generally speaking anywhere you find a decent hole on the stream it will hold fish & numerous species.

I'm pretty sure that a mile or less down stream from the water treatment plant, you would still be on Little Piney. From the limited exploring that I have done on both Little Piney and Peters, there are pools, some a bit deep, but wouldn't consider any a "pond". There are some ponds off of Peters Creek near "the patch", but doubt there are many smallmouth. I haven't heard of any pickeral in this side of the state. They get them in eastern PA. Probably some around in certain bodies of water, but don't think there are any in the rivers or their tribs on this side of the state. I fished the rivers pretty hard for a good stretch of time and never heard or seen any pickeral.

I tried for smallmouth, but didn't catch any. I was about half a mile downstream from the water treatment plant. I was fishing a deep spot along a natural rock cluster, about 3 feet deep.

If so, I know of some 4 to 8 foot deep "pools up and downstream from the water treatment plant, but more so upstream from it.

I heard the same thing, went out just to "try" the ponds out and when I came around the corner I was somewhat shocked at the amount of people. I didn't waste too much time at the ponds, people standing elbow to elbow. Only seen bluegill being caught but I was told there are carp in there. Fished the creek that runs along side the ponds for a few moments but no luck. As I was asking people about the ponds I was warned about the whole tresspassing thing, no one seemed worried about it as if they were exempt for citation. Nonetheless, I won't waste the 5minute ride to go back. Much moreprodcution from Elizabeth Smallmouth

I haven't been to the ponds in about 20 years, so wasn't aware of them being posted. Although they could have been back then too... Deep sections of the creeks is what I meant by pools. "The Patch" is the neighborhood in Jefferson Hills that Peter's Creek runs next to, right off of Rt 51 near the 43 on ramp. Metal - Do you ever pick up any large mouth near Elizabeth?

I catch the occasional lm out of the mon, but have far better luck with smallies. I don't spend a great deal of time on the Mon, I am more of a lake type. You cant beat it for catfish though, some real monsters in that area.

No Idea why there smaller, guess costs, or maybe the die off some hatcheries had a few years back. I caught 15"+ regularly 10-15 years ago, maybe as early as 5 years ago, but not recently. The used to put a decent number of Palamino in, and some brookies. (they brookies never seemed to make it) ORIGINAL: pwk5017 Any reason why the fish keep getting smaller DJ? Saw the channel cat near where the Little creek enters on the new road upstream from gill hall a few hundred yards. It was in the late 90's maybe before the road was there. Those were the days. Nice, secluded and peaceful, for a local water. ORIGINAL: leolizard Ever caught or seen smallmouth bass there? I live in south park, near piney fork run. Never caught a sunfish, rock bass, smallmouth, largemouth, or crappie, and have fished the creek extensively from cogos to 51 for 15 years. So does that tell you how rare they are? Better off at Cannonsburg lake for them.

I usually get a lil smallmouth or two about every 2-3 trips, now granted the "few" bluegills, saugers & even the "handful" of largemouth (prob only ever caught 2 or 3 of them) and the just as few whitebass were & are very, very few in & between.

Not 1. Did manage a sauger one fall a few years back. He smacked a Rapala from a deep pool. Got carp, suckers, chubs, but never caught anything else beside trout.
