about 4.5 feet high for the walnut gauge is good, i don't know about the brandy/elk one.

I just checked and saw 545cfs. That's too high. Now 25cfs would be too low. I'm guessing somewhere in between might be better.

Brandy Run cfs discharge readings have been down for months, water is good when the GAGE height is around 1.7 or so. Personally I think its easier to judge the water based off the cfs for Brandy.

I like how the USGS can't even spell GAUGE when it is used in proper context.

OK.  The numbers are starting to make a little better sense.  The GAGE or GAUGE reports for Brandy Run are 2.2 and 5.44 at Walnut at 2:30 p.m. today.  The Uncle Johns webcam gives me the feeling that current conditions are poor.  Is this a fair assessment using the numbers?

Shot an email to the USGS point man and asked what was the criterea for choosing a gage for closing and here was his reply.

Thank you for sharing your interest in our streamgage network and the data it provides. We hear your voice and the voices of many others who rely on these data. The funding that is in question is part of an annual amount we receive to operate and maintain the sensing, recording, and transmitting equipment as well as maintain the integrity of the data. We are working diligently to recover some or all of the funding needed through other sources so that the operation of these streamgages can continue. We encourage you to voice your opinions to others who may be of assistance in this fund-recovery effort.

The threatened streamgages are part of a federally funded program called the Susquehanna Flood Forecasting and Warning System. The annual operation and maintenance costs for the network of streamgages is partially funded by state agencies. The part of the operation and maintenance funding that is threatened was traditionally funded on an annual basis by Congressionally directed funding, commonly known as an earmark, to NOAA and the National Weather Service and, most recently, to the Susquehanna River Basin Commission. The federal government is currently operating under a Continuing Resolution which does not include any earmark funding. In addition, we do not expect earmark funding to be included in future Congressional budget allocations. No other logic was involved in determining which streamgages may be closed or operate at reduced servicing levels.

Look at your lowest, highest, median, and mean.  Your median compared to the current should give you a general idea on how to judge what the conditions are like.

one stream I fish is perfect at 500 cfs, the other is low at this rate... subjective.

I agree w. the others, look at the webcam, write down the conditions (high/muddy), and compare this to the current discharge in one of the two values (feet or cfs).
