new fish

Hey guys - have been away for a week or so but just read DSR report about NEW fish entering the system on expected high water.
I may have started an episode a few weeks ago  about new  looking fish in late spawn season and believed they had just come in. Dime was saying that after they spawn they get new looking again on the way out  while getting back in shape and he sees it commonly down in DSR  fishing drops. Guys went back and forth on it a bit.
Didnt say much at the time but I fish high in the feeders a lot during spawn as well as upper river and NOT down below. Thats where I see the new looking stuff. A LOT newer than what Im catching in the  cold. Not all the fish -but some of them and in the early spawn way up too- not just later when dropping.
Just for the sake of an opinion being thrown around -If they are expected in the next week or so , Welll-mid April aint that far off.
Look how  "late" some of the Hos and Sharks have been coming around. Was up 2 weeks ago and some of the dead HOS had just died a few days before.
Not one of those guys who cant let go when wrong but this one still has me guessing

Hi Dime;
Both I guess- and neither is a bad thing- like you said this river is Great.
BTW - still believing some of those late steel are very fresh as they are on the beds and or moving up.

Guess we are getting quite lucky with the snow melt and big rain coming in mid  March instead of April.  Hopefully the major floods and real high water will be in the next couple of weeks instead of during the spawning period.   Suppose the Steel that hasn't come in yet will do it  on this high stuff.  Couldnt imagine it much better than my last frozen trip or two but - who knows.
Any guesses on this stuff causing the spawn to happen a bit early. Would think if the majority of snow melts early the water may warm earlier too. The water seemed to warm real quick last year and the spawn on my favorite feeder spot was REAL quick- didnt last at all- fish came in and it seemed like just a day or two and they were running out. Never saw so many beds show up so quick.

Last year was definitely an early spawn retired. Im sure this water will trigger some early spawn. As of yesterday there was still a presence of fresh fish in altmar. Keep in mi.d though; the upper tug hill still has 2+ foot of snow in it that will still be around, so im thinking optimistically and hoping we will have cooler water temps and higher flows than we hadlast year going in to may. I am happy to see thewater being released before the bulk of the storm tonight. I will be up this weekend and let you know whats happening

The water will be down to base flow in early May(per FERC agreement)--can't remember the exact date---after that it only takes a couple of warm days to really get the water temp up.

Steel on a pin---so easy a caveman can do it.

Hi Dime,
Got up early in April last year and went to one of my favorite side stream areas. There were some moving up and I took my rod back to the truck and just walked a mile or so looking around as I didnt want to bother them much immediately before the spawn. Besides I like to just look atem sometimes.
Went back about 10 days later and only saw one female with a couple of males left on a bed in that whole mile- Left them alone too. All the rest came and went in that 10 days there were beds all over the place and had been none on that first April trip.
That first trip was one of those -you dont have to catch fish to enjoy fishing days- there were lots moving in.

      Hey Metal,
That low flow will probably signal the end for most silver as they are sure to exit quick on the low warm stuff. Have been playing with some till the end of May the last few years up top though-=even seeing some still on beds in secret spots in mid to late may.

Last year this time there was no snow on the ground at all mostly... we had already had a few days above 70 aswell. Most tribs atthis time last year were holding spawning fish and yes by mid april there was not enough water in them to hold too many of them. Metal is right with the base flow but let's hope there is more water this year than last.hey retired; im gonna send you a pm so check your mailbox.

Little salmon. Trout brook. Had some crazy fun days on the little salmon. Got more big browns in one day than all my time fishing the big salmon river(28). Pontoon boats is the way to go. Lots of private land though, the owners do not let you walk on thier land. I donate to the sisters and have at it.

Just read where the river's down to 1800 so checked the Web Cam.
Still looks high downtown, must still  be a lot of runoff happening along the river.. Looks like coffee too. I hate that high muddy stuff. Nasty Nasty

hey pete, I was up but didn't fish. I saw plentyof fished hooked though even when it was around 4000 on saturday. We hopped the fence to the hatchery to see what was going on there and beaver dam and the fish ladder was holding a few thousand fish. So if anyone is wondering where the large numbers of fish are... hi.t hint ...as for water levels and future... surprisingly they didn't get too much rain last week and supposedly they were running excessive water to thaw the gates. As for future levels... I went up to salmon river falls and there was betteen 2 and 3 feet of packed snow you could walk on top of. There was between 1 and 2 foot on my property... I imagine even more in redfield and theadirondacks supposedly got fresh snow over the weekend. So.... definitely watch the weather andwater closely because there's still the makings for some major flooding. On saturday I walked a little no name creek near my property and found a pair spawned out cohoes which is the latest I've ever seen. Still rubbing up on each other... and also a 15+ steely in its lonesome. As for the tribs, orwell and trout were at primelevels.. I didn't check the Dandys but I imagine they are running at perfect turquoise color by now. Good luck to all...

Hi Randy,
Thanks for the advise but all tied up with politics right now- annual budget time- hate it but the annual fight lasts a while.
You wouldnt believe how some people can fight over a lousy few million one way or the other- really cuts into the fishing time.

Sent that few million one way or the other back to the taxpayers.  We won't complain!  Hope you get a chance to get away soon as I know how much you love this time of year up here.

Lets end your troubles now & split the loot between us guys on the SR board. I just got my annual Simms order & a print of a Brown Trout from an artist friend, all new fly lines, some minor parts for my little Saturn & need to recoup some funds.

Just got back from 4 days fishing. The bite shut off friday and the guides said it was the worst weekend they have seen in some time. We faired very well with many big browns and one steel. We fished hard and my back and shoulders are killing me but worth the pain. Pink worm small and large took all fish. Fresh eggs took record chubs(50+) but the browns were hitting hard on pink.

Hey jonny, was it the lower river you were hitting browns in? I imagine by now that a lot of fish in the river are setting up on gravel. Last weekend I was up and saw a few thousand in the hatchery and beaver dam. A lot of big fish too. Give it a few weeks and let that water temp hit 40.... should be hot... thanks for the report.

You guessed it dime. All browns were taking in the lower river.I will pm you the exact spot if you want. Its a good high water spot. I had to stop using the float and bounce to get them. The float would not make it past the chubs. The browns wanted nothing to do with eggs of any color(weird) Only worms. One preggo female and 5 nice males. Also one female steel. Great time but worked real hard for them, body hurt hard.
