14' Aluminum Boat Modification

Years ago I purchased a 14 foot aluminum semi-v bottom boat and trailer. Ive grown bored of its basic design and decided that my new project is to mod the thing up. The following is a list of goals i plan to achieve on the boat over the next few weeks.

Paint trailer as well as boat
-Elevated brake lights
-Flat deck on bottom of boat
-Small elevated deck on front of boat w/pedestal seat
-storage compartments
-livewell
-electrical switching system

This is a basic desciption of what I would like to acomplish and after doing a good deal of research it seems very reasonable. The decking will be at the same level as the origional benches in order to maintain as much stability as possible. I will include pics as I go and will be posting my progress to this site as well as the tinboats messag board (which has amazing examples of small aluminum boat modifications). Has anyone on this board attempted this? Any tips will be greatly appreciated. I hope to have pics of the boat in its current condition within the next week. heres a link to a boat very similar to mine that was done up in a way that I am shooting for http://www.tinboats.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=16069

Cant wait to start! I think its going to be a fun project

Do not let any other metal touch aluminum
Use marine wire, go a gauge larger than needed and solder all wire connections.

Thanks! Will definitly take your advice. I also heard that certail types of wood (for flooring) will negativly affect aluminum overtime. How would you treat te wood to prevent this. I plan on covering the wood with marine grade carpeting as well

Just watch the weight. Anything you add will reduce your weight limit.

Check out the main board and general boating board (if you haven't already). I know Slickfish did one a year or so ago, and another member did one a year or so before him. It was pretty cool following along in their progress. It seemed like a lot of work those guys did.

Great point on the keep an eye on your added weight, and do the calculations before you go and buy your materials. You don't want to end up with only 200lbs to spare, unless you plan on boating alone... I know fishing with 2-3 guys, we usually take about as much gear/motors/coolers/gas/minnow bucket that equals another person.

You might want to check into what is called COOSA BOARD.
It is a marine product that replaces plywood, basically fiberglass mat with chopped fiberglass strands running opposite to the mat.

Stronger than marine ply and about 1/2 the weight.
Only thing you need to watch is that you need to drill pilot holes for screws and be careful with overtightening of hardware.

Here's what treated wood will do to aluminum.  The prior owner replaced this transom board with treated wood a few years before I bought it.  everywhere there is green or scale, there's a hole through the aluminum.

Snag, we did the exact same mods on a 14'.

Treated wood products these days are bad for aluminum, you are right. 2 of the main chemicals that are used to treat them are ACQ (aluminum copper quat) and CA (copper asole) both will deteriorate metal, especially in wet conditions.

Thanks again guys! My boats weight capacity is listed at 585 lbs. The most people i will ever have on this boat will be 2. Lets say we both weight 200 lbs leaving 185 lbs to play with. This weight will have to include motor, supplys, decking etc. Does it seem unreasonable or should we go ahead and give it a shot. I have a feeling that the only way well find out whether its possible or not is just by going and doing it.

For patching holes in the aluminum or filling rivets use alumalloy or alumaweld.
It is aluminum alloy sticks that melt with a propane torch-kind of like brazing or soldering
The repair is more durable than the aluminum you started with.
It can also repair props and drive housings

Just be careful heating the riveted joints on aluminum boats.
There is a "joint sealer" that is applied when the boat is riveted together at the factory and too much heat in the wrong place will cook it out of the seam and give you a constant leaker!

Thanks again guys keep the good info comming! Got some of the trailer dismantled and sanded. Still have a little more to do. Going to make vertical extensions for the taillights in the next day or two. Hopefully have it painted and finished by te end of the week if the weater warms up and allows me to do so!

First off id like to say thanks to all you guys...Havent gotten much of a response from the tinboats site surprisingly. Your guys info and opinions will help out greatly with this project so keep em comming!

Well although its nothing exciting or huge, im bored and i figure ill toss up a quick update with some pics. Attacked the trailer this weekend with a ginding wheel and hit the really bad spots. After a few light sanding sessions, I laid a few coats of paint on her. Turned out looking pretty good. Thanks to my buddy rick who let me use his spray gun. Decided to give my old wheels a quick coat as well (should hold me off till I get a new set). Tomorrow I will be touching up some of the drip marks, painting the rear fenders and undercarriage back to black.

Well the trailer looks great! Finishe painting and should be completley done by the end of the week. Will include pics as always. Was also putting out that i am looking for a larger motor. My current 5.5 isnt very reliable and just doesnt have the power i need. Im looking idealy for a 9.9 and if the price is right will pay in cash. I aslo have some cool stuff for trade as well. Pm me if you have any offers and would like to know what i have to offer
