Lets Actually Talk Fishing!
OK, I'm sure most of us are itching for spring and getting back out there on the water. I'm starting this thread to get us hyped up for it all and talking more fishing. I don't know about you, but the feeling I get this time of year, every year, is a feeling of complete renewal and excitement. I'm like a little kid getting ready to open up his presents Christmas morning! All the things we do from sharpening hooks, pulling out all our tackle and spreading it out of the floor to just see it all, uncovering the boat and cleaning it up in preperation for the new season, getting the gear ready, respooling, etc. etc. etc. I guess my recent obsession or re-introduction to painting lures and wanting to create lures has got me wondering...I'd like to discuss or poke into the minds of folks who think like I think everytime spring rolls around. Whats the hot color going to be for muskies or walleye this spring? Whats the go-to lures going to be? What are the latest baits or tackle on the market like? I'd like to see what your favorite patterns/lure are and for what species of fish. Whether smallies, LM bass, pike, muskie, trout, walleye, wipers or whatever. Discuss you experiences with them and even post some pics of the patterns/lure or successes you've had on them. I'm not a fly-guy, but I have to admit, I love to just sneak into the Fly Tying Forum from time to time to see the beautiful craftsmanship from the guys who frequent there. Tell me more about them! Anything!! Lets just talk fishing for a refreshing change around here.....Please. I'll begin with my favorite pattern and lure, for muskies of course, and why it is so. The Pattern is BROWN PERCH....more of a Copper Perch I'd call it. Its tough to see, but it is a solid gold underlay with copper/brown bars and scales. The belly is a pearl white finish with the florescent orange gullet. The gullet is one thing I like to add to many of my baits for that extra flash and I think gives the lures a nice finish look. In the Sun This Lure and Pattern accounts for 2 muskies over 50" in PA and many more over 40". It caught 6 muskies at a 2 day Chautauqua Lake Tourny 2 years ago. A funny story about that tournament was when I had just caught and released a 46 incher...my brother(my tournament partner) was still setting out his lines to continue fishing....Of course, my first one back into the water was the Brown Perch (Old faithful as I call it) Also PLEASE include those funny/goofy names you give to your favorites....I know you do it!! I no sooner clicked over the bail when the counter hit 45ft. as the rod buckled over!!! You gotta know my brother Dave, he is a character and he has about 90% hearing loss....Right when my rod went off I started yelling, but he was busy getting his lines back out and could not hear me....So I slapped him on his back and yelled FISH, FISH, FISH.....He just started shaking his head and was like "You Mutha Fu*#%^!!!!, that lure is F*^&$in' hot! He was so pumped up, I'll never forget that day! Heres that 46" from that tourney... OK....lets see your "Old Faithfuls"...Lets hear the stories, lets see those memories. Lets talk FISHING!

I do believe the brown/copper perch would be a top producer due to the resembalance in color to carp which I believe is a staple food source for Muskie in just about any water.

Is that a Wiley label I see on the bottom ? I used to make my own spinners before I got in to tying my own flies & jigs. I have one fly I call the "Wonder Bug" that I tie, cause I wonder what it looks like. But it cathces fish, sorry no pics avaliable. But I do like to tinker with things like making my own perch spreaders (Canadian style w/weight in middle) for ice fishing, ice fishing depth finders and last year I even made a few fake under water structures(plant) to put down the holes around me to draw in the fish while ice fishing. I've made my own chum bags for ice fishing as well. Thats kinda stuff, I'd love to be able to make lures like that, just don't have the time and money to get it started. I even made a spoon lures out of actual spoons, that's fun...

Why is this board so gd slow this am? I'm bored out of my friggin mind too. Is this ice age around here ever going to end? Looking forward to March and fishing the harbors for skipper sthd, the Catt in April/May for skippers and bass. Paul, you do a nice job on your muskie repaints. Any combination of brown, olive, black back with yellow or gold sides, white or yellow belly seems to work well around these parts. Couple color combos I'd like to see you try are: carp - brown back, orange scale over yellow or gold, white belly, red throat creek chub rainbow - blue/silver back, yellow/orange/yellow sides, white belly, red throat. bullhead - your brown perch does a good imitation of one. Lots of bullheads in Chaut. Muskies eat a lot of these here. Check out Ziggie's, Rocketman's color charts. Lots of cool colors/patterns. IMO Ziggie has the best color selection of them all. Back to the vise, need to tie up a few more rabbit strip tubes for sthd this spring.

Jeb - Yes, thats a Wiley....I repainted it that color...it also happens to be a "Fatbody" Deep Diver which is my favorite lure for trolling PA, OH and NY waters. If I get the chance tonight, I will try to take a pic of my "Old Faithful" pretty chewed up and been recoated with clearcoat 3 times!! LOL You added some cool stuff to the thread great ideas...pics would be awesome! Thanks! Bob - Thanks for the compliments....I will certainly check out the patterns from Rocketman's site which I know well, but have not been to in years. Always looking for ideas. All I can remember is that we had the same name in common when i did the muskie guiding thing...."Slimetime" when I'd type that in a search engine, his site would pop up too. Also, thanks for the pattern ideas...I will certainly give them a try. That carp sounds interesting...almost like a St. Lawrence pattern. I got some Leo jerks that need re-painted, I'll post 'em when they're done. Check these patterns out...pretty nice - http://www.muskymaniacs.com/page/page/3082266.htm

Being in Texas for nine months and now back in PA, I have been getting anxious to get back out on PA waters in my boat. I find myself back in the winter routine of preparing, more preparing and over preparing for the upcoming fishing season. It's this time of year when your imagination of the anticipated success is at its peak. Remembering past catch's, the people with you, and planning future trips all contribute to the anticipation. The anticipation is very much like the night before a big fishing trip. Some of my to do lists include: - Running new line on my trolling reels. - Replenishing my stock of worm harnesses and spoons. I tie my own, and tape my own blades. (I am considering trying the powder paint vs. tape, but I have great success with tape) - Buying equipment I really don't need. - Get the boat out earlier and target species or bodies of water I may not be as familiar with, and I really mean it this time.

I'm hoping the new strike king slab hammer crappie cranks are the hot ticket. Bass Pro use to make a smaller crankbait that was killer on crappies trolling and once they stop making them I've been looking for a similar one. http://www.basspro.com/Strike-King-SlabHammer-Crappie-Crankbaits/product/10219695/-1735563 I'm also gonna try to run some reef runners on some local lakes for walleyes I want to hook into my first musky this year so it have a couple big bucktail spinners and will be buying some plugs to troll My go to bait for smallies is live bait caught out of French Creek, and for LM usually minnies or if I'm using artifical I stick with Gulp 6" worms.

Speaking of custom baits, this pattern(not the lure) won the World Walleye Championship last year on the Miss. River. Painted by a good friend of mine right here in PA. This has been a hot selling pattern at the shows this year. Ironhed

Paul, thanks for the link. Have seen it and have a couple RJ's musky rockets. Very well made and good selection of colors. The foiled perch looks beautiful. The ones I have are jointed walleye, 7" I believe. They pound very hard, will take speed, but don't wander much. Haven't caught fish on them yet, much prefer the Lokes and Ziggies for their erratic, wandering qualities. That atomic carp sure does look cool though. The 8" straight cisco looks like it would be worth a try. Another one gaining in popularity around here is Baker's 5" deep diving wood shad. Bought a couple to try in the upper lake in Aug/Sept. Happy hooker in lakewood had them last fall but are out of them now. Favorite trolling lure - 6" jointed Loke, perch, white belly. Walleye- close second. Favorite casting lure - Homemade 8" jerk (Latiano imitation), solid flat black. Like the 8" Leo jerk also.

dang, paul....you're an artist. beautiful, to say the least. i love wading. walleyes in the spring, early on floating rap 11s. later on size 5 shadraps. smallies on floating 7 & 9s, again on smaller shadraps. steelhead on big, weighted treble hooks. crappies, white marabou or chartreuse twister tails. this year i am going to do more cat fishing. just summer time fun. shrimp will be the ticket.

I've always had my best luck with live minnies for trout. little tip: puncture the minnow so it's bleeding just a bit. they want it injured. You guys mite think i'm crazy but i've found that when fishing waxies if you put some blades of grass or leaves on your hook with the worms, it makes the fish think it's more realistic. for musky, yea i catch em. big lures, double jointed, crank baits, you name it, I got it, but shh, if the wife only knew LOL.

My favorite bait to throw in the lakes is a Spittin Image(smalltopwater). Have caught many Muskys and the Smallmouth just crush them. If I'm trolling for Musky, I like the J-13 Rapalas (perch or orange) and a Musky Jitterbug. Stream fishing I love to throw the smaller floating Rapalas, they will take about any fish in the creek.

Growing up, I used to fish the Conequnessing and the little 2" silver rapala straight floater was the ticket. I miss those days and have plans on doing some of that this summer as well. It was nothing to catch 30 smallies in a mile and a half stretch of the river. Avidangler....I'm looking forward to the "Good Friday" Repeat trip this year...April 22...Its MY TURN for a biggun! Maybe she'll be 50lbs this spring!

Nice looking stuff here guys. I'm looking forward to the early 'eye jig hit on pymy....some nice peaceful drifting. pink/pearl lead, or pink/purple floaters with fatheads are always good to me out there early spring. Also, the ice-off crappie bite... The ideal day for me would be drifting for 'eyes followed by some hot pannie action in a certain bay. ORIGINAL: psu_fish I'm hoping the new strike king slab hammer crappie cranks are the hot ticket. PSU, another idea for crappie cranks...maybe you're already on it... I had good luck hitting nice crappie last year while trolling for 'eyes.... I'd run the big 5/8 oz Hotntots out the back for 'eyes (firetiger or worn out white) & the smaller 3/8 oz. Black/Silver scaled Hot n' Tots out the sides for craps. boated some slabs on those small H&T's. Good thread guys!

Early season Night bite Eyes on Erie is hard to beat. Ripsticks on Inline boards by the glow of the Moonlight. That is most definately one of my favorite ways to fish. Before that getting the boat ready off to Port Clinton in early April then Lake O Spring Kings, looking at giving the Lake trout a try this year out of NE in April too. Pounding Eyes in the Central basin from June-September with Some Late season Lake O King action mixed in, some late season perchin then back to the streams until freeze, rinse, repeat the next year. Oh Ya... Helmut was the money maker last year with Green Flash, Fruit Loops, Blue Moon, and BN Blueberry Muffin rounding out the top 5 with a late season push to Bare naked barbie. No noticable color pattern there.
