There are other bows with a bit better quality and warranties, IMO.  What the Barnetts have going for them is their speed.  They are very fast bows for the money and they have their fans.

For $400 your choices are limited.  The Parker BushWacker is a option for $399 but it will be slower than the Barnetts. For $100 more you can get a Parker Enforcer package or Excalibur Axiom package.  Both will be slower but much better quality and warranties, IMO.

    Good luck.

My 2 cents... from the cheap guy

I too did not want to spend alot of money on one at my age...

The archery shop owner I dealt with said almost the same thing as dpms said about the Barnett less expensive models.. not the best quality on the cheaper ones..

I opted for a Horton Summit 150 and so far I am happy with MY decision to but that one...

course I have no problems with my Zebco 202s and 404s either

Maybe I should not say this.... but I will anyhow.... he also said he WOULD NOT buy a crossbow from anyone other than a dealer that you feel you can TRUST... and who has TOTALLY checked it out for saftey issues before selling it.. they can HURT YA !!!!!

thanks trout for your imput...all very good except one thing...i believe the shop owner told you that you shouldnt buy from anyone but a trusted dealer...that so they get the extra 100-200 over wholesale...i will definately talk to knowledgeable dealer before making my decision but will probably buy online and have a pro check it out before using...thatll save me some loot to accesorize the new unit

You may take a serious look at the Parker Buckbuster 175 model.  This is discontinued for 2011.  I know a dealer that is moving them at $399 which includes a rope cocker, quiver, multi reticle scope and 6 custom arrows.  Street price on these was $599.  These bows are shooting 330fps and come with a lifetime warranty.

I talked to him this past weekend and there were still some available.  PM me if interested.

Picked a Ten Point on eBay. Nobody could come close. No problems what so ever. Girlfriend got her TenPoint from Gander as a package. Gander red dot went belly up but other than that no problems. Sometimes clearance sales can save you a bunch. Also Cabelas Visa point program is like getting something for free. Most archery pro shops will look over your X-bow for free if you have any concerns. They hope you will return to patronize upon needing merchandise and you should. But if you can save a decent amount going somewhere else by all means go there.

I bought my bow a couple of years ago. I did my research in Ohio as these guys have been cross-bow hunting for years. If you want an indestructable bow for that kind of $$$$. Horton is the way to go. I have an Explorer 150. It hits in the same spot everytime. I just set my buddy up with 175. You can still pull it back with out cocking straps. Drawback to these bows are, they're a lil heavy, but very tough. Go ahead, throw it out of your treestand. You'll still hit the bullseye.

I've bought two Hortons from pawn shops for both my son and I and we've used them successfully for the past 3 and 4 years with no trouble at 150 bucks a peice.   I'm a little more thrifty maybe but the horton crossbows have served us well.

Picked up this new 2011 Ten Point Stealth XLT this week.  Sweet bow.  Very narrow up front with a light weight barrel and riser.  Haven't got any range time with it yet but can't wait, if the weather ever breaks.

Gonna be filming hunts for Crossbow Magazine TV this year with it.

I think you will be more than satisfied with your new x bow. Keep her string and cables waxed up and the rail well lubed !

I have a Excalbiur shoots fast and very accurate no pullyes or tuning required because it is a re curve it is a little wider but also a little lighter. This may not fall into your price range but is wort looking at before you buy.

    Hey O A
Ditto on the Cabelas card and FREE stuff.
Their prices in the store are generally a LOT higher than the magazine though so watch where ya buy.
