30 HP Jet?

I'm posting this for my step-dad who isnt the most computer savy.

He is looking to buy a 16 foot welded jon boat with 30HP 2-stroke jet outboard. There will be 3 guys fishing out of it and his concern is the 30HP isnt enough power to get it up on plane with 3 guys, fuel and gear

Main fishing location will be in the Allegheny River from Tidioute down to Franklin

I have an all weld 16 foot Trackler Grizzly with a 30 hp 2 stroke Johnson jet. No doubt, 30 will not be enough to plane that boat with 3 guys, fuel, gear, unless the guys weigh 100 lbs each.

My boat, with 12 gallons of fuel, full livewell, 2 guys, trolling motor, 2 batteries, and gear, struggles to get on plane. Once it is on plane it runs good. I have to put the other guy in the front of the boat when taking off to assist in getting on plane. Once it's on plane, he can move back beside me. Now, I do run it with me, my wife, and 4 year old daughter. It does ok with that combo but I have to place wife in front and kiddo beside me. When running that way I also try to cut back on the amount of fuel and other stuff I carry.

I also formerly owned a 16 foot Lowe Roughneck with a 35 jet and an 18 foot Roughneck with 80 jet. The 18 footer was by far my favorite river jon, it ran great and planed easily. The 16 foot Roughneck ran good but even it struggled with 3 adults.

If he is always planning on having 3 adults I'd go to a 17 footer with at least a 40 jet.

The upside to my current rig is that I can take the jet o/b off and drop my 20 hp prop on for the lakes. It doubles nicely as a dual purpose rig and runs awesome with the 20 prop.

I run a 16' sea Nymph with a 40HP Yamaha 4 stroke jet and with three guys (200 lbs each), full live-well, gear, etc... I can get on plane somewhat quickly. I get about 22mph with the 3 and loaded. When I run by myself or with one rider I get 24/25 mph and on plane instantly.

It has a lot to do with hull design, weight placement and of course jet hp output. Do your homework and contact one of the dealers up toward Tionesta or Franklin. They will be more helpful than you think. Tionesta Marine (Boone) or Weigle bros. in Franklin. Pushing that much weight in current will not get you on plane with that setup. I run a 18" Tracker Pro Jet /120 hp inboard jet on the upper Alleghany and have watched many struggle with under powered rigs.

I'd plan on needing a 50 hp jet for that boat and loading if you want any kind of performance.

Weigle bros, as OA stated, can point you in the right direction.

I assume from your post he is looking at something used or new and that is the combo.  If it is new, I'd bump up the Jet size or, pass on the used boat and look for something with a bigger Jet.

What hasn't been asked yet is this:  is this a 30hp powerhead with a jet?  If so, then it's only about a 20hp jet, as outboards lose about 30% efficiency with the pump.  If it were me, I'd look for a 60/40 jet.

50/30 should do just fine.  I have a 60/45 merc on a 17' Monark bass boat.  With 4 people, gear, 2 full live wells and a dog, it gets up on plane quick and moves about 25mph...

My buddy has a 16' jon boat with a 50/30 jet on it and it moves faster then my boat with 3 people in it and only 2 in mine.  You will be more then fine with a 50/30 jet on the boat cause it sounds the same as my buddies...

The worst day hunting or fishing will always be better then the best day at school or work!

Throw the river current into play and you have a whole new ballgame. Take my advice ans contact a dealer. They are the experts.

I think he has it narrowed down to a 17.5-18.5 with a 90/65 Jet. Problem is finding the right one for the right price and that isnt too beat up on the bottom. Leaning towards a 4-stroke as well, with the only 2 stroke in consideration being a Merc Opti-max

I agree, a 50/30 would be fine for a 16' boat.  My cuz has a 16' Lowe Roughneck with a 50/30 and it does fine on the upper allegheny loaded with 3 people and gear.  It won't break any speed records but it will get you through the riffles and where you need to go.

Keep in mind the 4 strokes are heavier.

Yep, 4 strokes are heavier, and on smaller boats like a 16' it forces the back end of the boat to sit really low in the water. Can cause issues when your trying to float through riffles and shallow places.

    I see a reference to a 50 being a 30 jet. I had a 50 and it was 35 at the jet.
