Fall 2010 Erie Tribs

I couldn't make it to Erie this past fall. Was last fall as bad as some reports said? Reports didn't sound too good. I watched Uncle John's Elk Creek cam quit a bit and there didn't seem to be much catching going on. I got the idea that there was less fish, low clear water, then got water and fish spread out, less fish at the easy access areas like Walnut project waters. and so on

I did not fish much, but from the couple of times I went, I saw more fisherman than fish.  From talking with a few friends who fished a lot more than me, they said it was not the best of years, but they caught plenty of fish.

I agree. The tribs had less fish than past years, but I found and caught plenty. One might say it was worth it.

Went up a few times, got pretty good conditions each time, and overall, didn't do as well as I expected. Was my technique responsible for that? Sure. Did I bring the same technique in 2009 and catch many more fish? Sure. Did I get another Erie permit for 2011? Sure...but I thought about not getting it for a long time.

When it was fishable, I felt this past season was better overall than the previous season. And I fished it a few times

This was my best fall ever.
But it was also my first exstended fall fishing the tribs in 20 years...
So these are the glory days to me, I missed out on the over abundance of fish that was there the few preceeding years...

The numbers were by far down from previous years however, I must say size was great. Had several days this year after a good rain where I caught a few fish in the 10 pound range each time out. Plus caught a 17 pound monster the opening day of deer season mancester hole, only a few guys out that day with perfect weather

Had a few nymphs and sucker spawns on her, but it was a gorgeous fish. I've caught several very large males in the past but never such a huge female steelhead.

I think one of the problems this past and previous year has been the inconsistancy of the water levels. For someone that can regularly check out and fish when the water levels are good
should have reguler good fishing. For the guys that live a long ways, 3-4hrs, that rely on information found on this site and on the USGS water data site are less likely to have as rich fishing experience. By the time a long range fisherman receives the needed information, decides when and with whom he is going with, and then drives there the conditions can and often are totally different leading to less productive days.

For me - Any day on the water is a good day - catching something is a bonus.

Plenty of fish just as good if not better than last year.

OK, thanks all for answering my post. It sounds like there was fish to be found if you made an extra effort. Maybe I'll retire this year and have the time to get to know the tribs better. thanks
