lake ontario tactics

helllo im an avid fisherman from the west coast, so i'm new to the east coast's salmon fishing and i was wondering if the tactics and lures are even close any info would help thank you

what tactics do you use out west? plugs, jigs, flies, worms, eggs, float, spin, fly???? if so just about any of those methods would work well for a variety of species at different times of the year...

for summer runs; steelhead, atlantics,browns, smallmouth and a fluke king here and there; they are there but a lot of time, studying and luck must come in to play. where from the west coast are you?

wiggle warts, rapalas and spoons work well. no trebles before november 1st though. hot shot produce fish from tail outs of larger pools from drift boat. if you fished mostly bigger water in oregon you might find things to be a little different here at the salmon river. i throw puffy yarn flies to salmon in the early season in the lower stretches of the river. i find deep sems in between pocket water produce the most fish for me. when fish are holding rather than running... i'm sure a wiggle wart fished straight downstream from you in the seems and runs i commonly fish would probably work well for salmpon and steel... good luck

btw, the river has steelhead in it now until early may, and they can be quite abundant and active at times... you should give it a try...

thats probably what i would do i have a fishrite explorer jet boat, lake fishing for the salmon would be great

Don't know the rules on the Salmon about power boats but you could definetly tear up the Oswego. Not pretty scenery but holds big fish.Spoons look good, think I saw Cleos and Krocodiles and Daredivils catch a lot, but any boat I was on ran single hooks.The spoons the captains we chartered with used spoons that were longer and more slender. Also used dodgers and flashers at times. A lot of options with a boat like that. Dip a line anywhere you will get something, good luck.Bays are full pike and largemouth.Check out any good tackle shop-they have as many colors as your wallet can support.

Hey 89. You can take your boat up to the douglastom property line. That's about a quarter mile plus upstream from rt. 3 bridge.

what test line do you recommend for the salmon fishing i was thinking 20 wit ha 25 leader.

Been going up for about 30 years and have NEVER seen  any kind of motor on the river. Even the drift boats in medium water hit bottom frequently. There may even be legal issues.
  Down low in the Estuary -just below DSR on the maps, they do use motors  and I have seen some medium size boats there over the years. There is a launch or two in the area as well.
I may be wrong but I believed you were indicating you wanted to go up the Salmon river as well as lake fishing with the boat. Even with a jet I dont think you could get half way up DSR even if they were to allow it.
