first day traditions

cabin fever for all of us I'm sure.

date is far away, and from what I read, you ice fisherman are enjoying yourselves.

to pass the time though, what's your first day of trout plans and/or traditions.  Creating new ones maybe?

As for me, I'll be with my boy tossing corn to those dumb fish at the same stream we've been fishing for years.  Just hope we don't run into any fools like last year who crowded my son out of his spot 10 minutes before it was time to wet a line.

For the last 12 years Danny and I have fished down at the Issac Walton League below Jacobus, PA. That is the same stream that my gran pap taught me to trout fish on and the same hole as well. This will be his last opening day with me for a while as he heads to college in the fall. That is for the early opener.

Quail hunt at the club in the morning and hope that the Grannoms on the Little J are in full swing for the afternoon to complete a "cast and blast" day with an old friend.

My Brother and I walk a little stocked creek near the house. Just like in Eire, walk 10 yards from a parking lot and you'll find little crowds... LOL

Every year I get to the old mans house around 6:30 he fumbles around collecting his gear trying to find his walmart bag with his new rooster tails, joe flies, hooks, and eggs in it. I eventually tell him we will just use my eggs and I have plenty of spinners and hooks. Then, he has to try to find his license and waders. Mind you that I told him to get this stuff ready the night before so we don't have an issue like last year.... then we finally get everything in the car and he finds his walmart bag in his vest and remembers that he also bought new line because his old line is crappy needs to be replaced. Meanwhile, I am completly dressed and ready to go have been since 6... it is now 7:40... we drive to the creek and get there get the new line on his rod, and walk down the path to a huge crowd where there is no room to fish. We eventually find a completly unmolested spot that a trout would not be caught dead in and sit there and question why we come out on the first day every year for 25 years now when the next day the fish would still be there and the people would not be. Truth be told I would not have this go any other way.....

Also, I pack a big lunch with chicken salad sammies, twinkies, mixed nuts, beef jerky, and all of his other favorites. It's my day to be with just my dad and "spoil" him. All this and the jerk out fishes me EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!  Good times, good times.....

I used to stream hop with my father and uncle, hitting 2 or 3 streams the first day. Now, the first day is always a busy work day for me. I don't really mind though.

I will (hopefully) be fishing a small stream in Central PA that has been "closed to fishing" for over 20 years. I will catch some nice native fish and release them, have a drink and a long conversation with my friend (who owns the stream) and then I'll head to Erie for the glo-bug hatch on Elk.

Fishing a local stream.  Build a fire, cook some food, drink some beer, and put on some tunes.  My buddies and I fish a spot not to many people go to.  We don't catch many fish there but we could care less.  It's all about the serenity.  Plus, my fishing starts in March at the DHALO sections.  Lots of fish, cold temps, no one around.  That's fun!

Our Lodge holds a tournament for kids on opening day and I go and help run it.  It is a blast.  The kids have a great time, some win some very nice prizes and everyone has fun.

Ill be working as usual. Like I do every single year. Hard to make the opener when ya work 6 days a week.

I used to go with 2 of my best friends to the same location every year for 10 years.Arrive at our spot around 6am eat breakfast and start drinking beers and sippin whiskey untill 8am. Talk about whos going to get the first fish, the most fish and the last one before 12 noon. All money bets,so we made a competition out of it. Had a blast doin it every year and then we grew up got families and real working jobs. Ahh the good ole' days. Never forget them.Times change and we roll with it. I still get out for it once or twice a few days later but its not the same as it was.

Split time between the kids soccer fields and on the stream (coach & parent). It should be a little crazy since two lakes in Beaver County will not be stocked. Should put more "circus performers" on the the waters I liked to fish. But oh well ! Just like every year, the weekend warriors will be gone by Monday. I'll have the next 2.5 months basically to myself other than the few die hards I see very year.
I was lucky, I grew up next to heavily stocked stream and have been able to know almost every nook and turn for several counties, so I will find a place to fish. I can't wait until my girls are old enought to properly fish a stream so I can start a new 1st day tradition with them. We hit the lakes for stockies, but I want to teach them how to read a stream and know where the fish are likely to be. I've had my oldest out on the stream and it usually involves her getting wet and muddy pretty quickly, so we se'll stick to the lakes for now, but soon at least one will be bending her rod on the stream with me.

My oldest with a winning bow from a local derby last year in May.

There will be 20 or 25 0f us, counting the kids, on a stream in Bedford. We fish till about 11:00, total trout kept is about 30. My boy, my brother and myself fillet the trout. We set up tables, on the farm we fish, some people batter, some bread and we deep fry the fresh trout. Others bring soda, elk or deer chilli, potato salad, baked beans, chips, dessert cakes and whatever strikes someones fancy. We make plates up for the local people who can't make it, but all are invited. This has gone on for about 20 years and everyone looks forward to it.Some of the regulars are from 4 different states. The local farm allows us to use the barn for the event if the weather is bad. Only thing we tell all newbes that show up is all is cleaned up before you leave. Can't wait!!....WF

Some people I only see opening day. Some of the little kids aint too little any more. I spend 15 minutes fishin and then take a disposable camera and take pics of our guys and bring them the next year for everyone to see. Pretty cool for the kids to see their pictures from 5 or 6 years ago...WF
