3 maggots on a mini foo...

...are hanging out under the ice in the tiny feeder creek that runs through my side yard.  In my boredom I hatched a plan to entertain myself this afternoon by trying to catch one of the steelhead that have set up winter residence.  Probably the only section on my property that a steelhead could keep it's back wet.  There is about 5" ice with just enough open water underneath for a fish to squeeze through.  I'll let you know how it goes when I check back around dark.  For now I'll sit here sipping a glass of barely wine watching the birds at the feeder.

    Says you.

I guess we'll be having venison for dinner tonight.  No takers.  Nice afternoon to spend walking around the yard and relaxing.  Wind is perfectly still.  Thermometer reads -5 F right now, but I don't know how accurate it is.  Quite pleasant really with the proper winter attire.

Nope.  Haven't had enough motivation to start a Photobucket account so I could post pics.  I hear you have to link them in.  Anyway didn't take any so nothing to post.

    Clay,

there is a small creek near my home that holds a few resident fish. Occasionally I go down to visit "Stan and Eric". I understand your journey. Fish or no fish, I'll bet you had a nice day.

Nothing wrong with being patient while comfortable. Though this is the first steelhead trotline that I have heard of. Let us know how it goes.

Definitely the 1st trot line for Steelies that I've ever heard of ! I've caught trout on them when I was a kid, messing around in the creeks, but for steelies, yikes ! Looks like you might have to use some strong line to aviod the snap off.

I wish I had a stream in my back yard, steelhead or not. Bet it was a good day to just get out and move around outdoors along the water.

also I might add, in erie, the small feeder streams are considered "nursery waters" and off limits...

Uh, not all of them. There are small streams that feed larger streams.

That's to be expected.  Can't post anything on here without someone getting their panties in a wad.

Anyway I probably should have been more specific.  I drilled an 8" hole in the ice and set-up one of my steelhead ice fishing rods on a stand.  Bail was open.  You got me on the unattended line though.  Come citizen's arrest me.

In all honesty I was away from it for about 45 minutes.  After I finished the beer I couldn't wait to check so I went back out and ended up staying the rest of the afternoon trimming brush around the creek.

So does three maggots on a mini-foo (although technically a jig and not a fly, but close enough for this joke) make Claypool a slob bait fisherman, and elite snob flyfisherman, or something else altogether?

The poster formally known as Duncsdad

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Most methods of catching steelhead are just fine. Except for pinning.

I vote for a little of everything.  I went through my slob bait phase when I was younger and fly snob phase about 5 years ago.  Now I'll fish whatever method better fits the conditions.  Last couple years I've been bottom bouncing flies with a spinning rod.  I have an identity crisis I guess.

    Claypool313,

I appreciate your keeping the adventuresome spirit of fishing alive and well! Reminds me of when I was a kid and tickled Brook Trout under rocks and banks and then grabbed them!
Maybe I'll try that again on Steelhead!
