uhhhmmm

Well, 2 hours ort with one hook up on saturday. There are a lot of fish holding though. The persistent angler will prevail to say the least. Otherwise, I shoveled, plowed and moved a lot of snow. I winterized my place. I dug out my trailer, hitched it and loaded my backhoe.... then broke down in cortland and still here. My truck got towed to owego(not oswego). I now have rented a truck luckily with a hitch on it. Tomorrow morning im having a transition piece custom made in syracuse so I can hitch my trailer to the rental truck.... i'll say no more at this point...

    Hey Dime ,
Since my next trip may have to be on this lousy 250 or so what would you suggest on the upper river. You guys have me trying the fly rod again and fishing when I m supposed to be by the fire so Im using my 8 1/2 ft. 6 wt and really liking it - as long as I dont strip line.
I dont mind using sacs or those little pink worm imitations instead of flies down stream from  the bridge either if thats what it takes, being a bait guy and all.

Retired,I'm not a fan anymore of this cold weather fishing but if I were going to fish now I would be using SMALL nympths and very light tippit and high sticking with just enough weight to tick the bottom.Keep your hand in contact with the line and watch your line for any twitch, they won't be slamming it in this cold water.

You took the words right out of my mouth. On days with some late morning sun they sometimes suspend a little off the bottom. Good luck...

Listen, I went two Saturdays in a row and I'm trying to get back. It's a tough sell on the home front if you know what I mean. Just one more trip and I know we can kill 'em. Any advise on how to sell another trip to the wife?

i'm up again 1st week in feb. for 3 days. for the wife pete; a little barter and trade always works well. it's never easy, but never give up your right to be an outdoorsman no matter what the women say... i myself have a gut feeling the jan. thaw will be in beginning of feb; it often comes late... although this past monday night in to tuesday was pretty unseasonably warm for this time of year. hopefully that wasn't the extent of the jan thaw... bottom line though; there are many fish in the upper river that periodically get very hyungry, also some big fresh males will be coming in down low sooner than later. just wait until the lower river deices for a day or two; they will be there... till then tight lines, or should i say dreams...

Pete this is what I did, buy her waders and gear and bring her along. She might like it and want to go all the time. My wife lasted a year or so, now the only fishing she does with me is out on the lake boat reeling in walleye.

    All great suggestions from above.
    Coupl'a extra ones :)
    -
If not useing a guide with a heater. (In the boat or not:) (I have both:)
Try parking close to the area you want to fish.
Walkiing in and out helps alot w/ generating heat. :)
    -
This way you can always continue fishing while she warms herself in the close by parked car.
Or, park next to where their is someplace warm to eat, drink and or at least warm up.
    Altar :)
This will give YOU a few extra hours to fish, doing what you enjoy, while she warms up?
    -
We all know how important it is to keep our other half happy. :) (In many ways :)
    -
Otherwise, check the weather and temp's.
    -
We presently 1/22 have some below zero temp's arriving tonight into Wed. approx.
Soon after the temp's are forecast to moderate to a more normal Temp. (Low-upper teens - to upper 20's)
Perfect weather and temps to pursue your game.
No wind chills forecast yet as well as snow.
By watching your weather - wind chill, etc..
Well most likely help her to more enjoy herself and yours.
    -
    Best Fish's,

P.S. One of the many tips I give to my booked guided anglers is to do a few things to help them to stay warm.
Besides the heater I have onborad all Winter.
    -
This well also help may of you wade angler's. (Comp.)
    -
I also suggest to wear your boot laces lose on your feet, if you have laces.
You want what we call a sloppy fit and or boot.
Sometimes if you where your laces tight, the way they were made to be worn.
You will most times cut off the important circulation of blood down the inside of you legs - ankles, (main artery) before it reaches your feet.
Cuasing a lack of blood flow and cold feet.
    -
Regarless, the main thing we all do on the river when faced with cold temp's, no matter the type of wader, is to simply take a lil break from fishing and walk a lil ways up and down the nearest path.
This keeps your blood flowiing thur all extremities of your body and well keep you fishing all day.
    -
I could write an entire article of best waders, etc...(5 mill, boofoot w. a 1,200 thinsuated boot. cheap $185 $)
    -
BUT, this will be a short post on this particular subject.
    -
    Best Fish's,
Hope this helped everyone a lil :)

Staying warm,or at least comfortable is not a problem. Try working 40 stories high on an aluminum scaffold on the north side (no sunlight all day) of a building under construction in the concrete jungle called the Big Apple.Standing in a river feels warm, at least the water can only go a little below 32F. Hands and feet are the problem everywhere although feet are less of a problem. The number one mistake is to let them sweat before you go out i.e. you have the heat cranking in the truck. As for hands, you are basically screwed. Can't have dexterity and toasty warmth. One trick I have found is to use chemical heat packs in fingerless gloves.Wear them on the backs of your hands, you can move fingers and they provide heat.Old style rag wool also seems best, it will insulate even when wet. Not many fibers will do this. OK that's my two cents worth.Anybody having luck (or skill) at 285?

wear a pair of those thin blue capilene gloves under your rag wools and your set. i bet thos darned red cheeked beauties are just about getting used to 285 and in a couple of days when they get that heat wave of 21 degree weather at night and mid 20s during the day, they will turn on in the right spot at the right time...
i believe the weather is calling for -17 tomorrow night in pulaski, i bet it will be -25 in altmar...

most any sportshop has em, all seasons has em for sure. they're a very thin blue cotton glove. when worn under another pair of full or cut fingered gloves, they're great. someimtes just even by themselves on days in the 20s with no wind for me.
