Yak Question
Thinking of buying a kayak for fishing and have couple questions? Looking at ocean trident and ascent, I have a canoe (Sportspal) and like it but was looking for something a little easier to load and carry, one spot I want to access is about 500 yards from road, looking for something stable that I can pimp out to be a real fishing machine yet would like something that won't tip over on a little bigger water if one of those green carp fisherman blows by me wide open, also any dealers in S/W pa that handle yaks and the add ons probably won't get them all (add ons) to start but would like an idea where I could pick up stuff. I know the ocean kayak is pricer why I'm looking at Bass pro's ascent but if I'm good to the little woman, maybe?

Where the heck you been? My experience with yaks has been in the ocean proper so I liked the wider, med. length sit on top yaks for more stability in the waves. If you don't feel really comfy, you can always add an outrigger like on a canoe. Get as much sealed storage, rod holders, and the best seat you can afford. If you fish for any length of time out of it, your back will appreciate it. If you are going to use it A LOT, I'd get one with foot pedals. Heard good things about the Hobie Outback. http://www.sit-on-topkayaking.com/KayakData/Reviews/PeddleKayak.html New ones are pretty pricey but, there might be some good deals on used ones out there, especially on Ebay. There are other models out there with foot pedals, too.

Thanks eyes, spent all fall chasing a bruiser and as far as I know hes still running, been hitting the hardwater a lot but this snow makes dragging a sled a chore, really like the Hobie but the price is a little much cause I've never used a yak before and hoping I like it, one of those deals where I don't want to spend too much but don't want to kick myself for not getting it right later.

Bronze,I have a 12ft native manta ray. Its 30" wide very stable. If you plan on using it on rivers, get 10 to 12 ft. flat water(lakes) get a longer one. I float to spots and wade fish. S.O.T. is the way if you get in and out of it a lot. Mine weighs 53 lbs, there is no way I'm dragging it 500 yds. or ft for that matter.Rods, tackle, cooler, and DO NOT get on one wthout a good pfd. Kayak fishing stuff is a good forum, theirs a guy selling new 2009 kayaks fairly cheap, he's a guide on the susky. Spring time you are welcome to try mine out,I love it.

I have a Wilderness Pungo 120 Angler sit-in, and I love it. Protected a little more during the colder months, and I have been adding the goods as time goes on. Up to a fish finder, 4 rod holders, camera mount. I will second the notion of getting the best seat and the most sealed storage you can. As far as dealers go, Wind and Water in Butler is a great place to go. He's got a nice event in the spring at Arthur where you can test all of his boats in the lake.

Here are a few old pictures of my kayak. I bought my Hobie Quest kayak at Wind & Water, Butler, PA. Any kayak fishing questions? Here is a great link for kayak fishing: http://www.kayakfishingmagazine.net/

Thanks guys, Beerman thats a fishing machine, now I really got the bug, Smallie I chase brown bass a lot on the Juniata and like the idea of a S.O.T.for getting in and out alot. gonna check the sites you guys have given me, another question, can I get by with a launch permit for fishing most places, I registered my canoe since I run a trolling motor on it but will only be paddling the yak and was wondering what permit would be best I do fish state parks and fish commission waters along with the rivers?

I'd just register it. That way, if you feel like rigging up a trolling motor for it in the future, you won't have to worry about it.

I just bought a Future Beach Angler 144, got a hell of a deal. With taxes, new it came to $360. It has 2 flush rod holders 2 dry storage hatches and a big hatch up front large enough to store extra rods, tackle, clothes, etc. I picked mine up at Dunhams, it got dinged up in transport so they knocked off 30%. A few scratches that would have happened as soon as I dropped it on the launch saved me over $120. Can't beat that! I had a smaller kayak that I bought and rigged myself for fishing. It didn't work so well for me. The flatter the bottom, he better. I tried an Ocean Kayak last year in the ocean fishing. (Big Yak) It was so **** stable I couldn't flip it if I tried. They are pricy though, close to $450 just for a kayak, not including a seat, anchor, ANYTHING. I would definitely recommend getting a seat with a high back support, otherwise your trips are either going to be VERY short, or VERY uncomfortable. Good luck!
