The issue with year-round seasons/stockings is the tradition of the opening day and the fact that those 1 weekend anglers pay for the rest of us to fish the rest of the year. With no opening day, the license sales plummet along with the trout stamps that pay for the program.

With no opening day anglers could still enjoy the thrill of the opener by fishing any of PA's Lake Erie tributaries on any weekend . Bring on the power bait chum slick!

ORIGINAL: bigesox11 I'll give you one more. How about having a license that expires a year from when you purchase it instead of following the calendar year? It doesn't matter to me so much because I fish throughout the year, but I have had friends that decide to go fishing with me in September or November and then of course their license expires in two or three months. That's a crap load of money to waste on a few hours of fishing, especially in PA. Virginia, for instance, has this type of fishing license. That's a great idea ! I also like the photo on the license idea too.

Maybe not pay for us all, but there is a huge portion of money coming in from those that trout fish less than 5 times per year, most of these fish opening day or the day/week or so after and don't fish for trout after. I've been one of them for the past 3-4 years, along with 10 or so of the 12 guys that I have an annual opening day outing with. I make up for mine in warm water fishing, and maybe 4-5 trout outings, but most of the guys in my group don't. I can't imagine we are alone in this. Even prior to this time, I didn't fish trout all that much more and always bought a stamp. There isn't much for quality trout waters in the general Pgh area, without having to drive for at least an hour. I'd think there are more than a few yinzers with trout stamps that only trout fish 2-3 times in a year. Now those with quality trout waters in their general vacinity, likely have much more multiple time fisherman, even if they are of the same skill level as your average WalMart/Cabelas/Orvis opening day warrior. All of which have about the same skill, just a tier of how much they pay...

WV pulls it off pretty well Pork. You don't think people would still fish without the discomfort of opening day crowds? Most of the folks down here who I would equate to the opening day crowd(trout fish only a few times a year), still make it out. The stock truck revivial following is pretty ignorant, but, If they just posted the "week of" instead of "exact date," that problem would probably dissapate too. The "tradition of the opening day" is a bad tradition.

Comparing WV and PA in general terms, is apples to oranges. Sections of PA and WV are probably identical, but not the overall state. I'd like to see the amount of money PFBC has and spends compared to WV, along with amount of angling pressure per mile of waterway. WV has a fraction of the urban/suburban population of PA, which I would imagine is a big portion of the "opening day and out" crowd. WV likely also has more cold water creeks that are suitable for trout habitat 365. PA, due to the amount of opening day warriors, is forced to stock streams where trout have no business being, with maybe a few surviving the Summers. Also, put in the variables of their state might actually be running their program a bit less shady! From what folks have said on here, much of our license money is shifted to the general fund, and not back into the PFBC. Not sure if I believe, but I'm guessing if the PFBC dropped revenue, they're budget is going to drop as well. Not saying it is the best system by any means. IF the amount collected is kept in the PFBC... I think all of us on this board benifit from it when it comes to amounts of fish stocked and other fishing related projects (stream improvement, access leases, ect). Even those of us that rarely trout fish. The trout opener only guys, have to purchase regular licenses as well, which funds warm water fisheries. If it is worth the annouance is a different issue completely.
