Painting a boat?

I was thinking about picking up a little bigger boat and just recently found out about one that can get a pretty good deal on, older boat and pretty good shape, though dull and not crazy about how extremely plain it is colorwise.

Anyway has anyone painted a fiberglass boat? I know they are gelcoated, and was curious as to how paint would hold up and if there were any tricks involved...

Have the equipment to spray, and have sprayed some cars back in the day, as has dad quite a few through the years, and he'd be no doubt helping on the project too.

Havent gotten into researching it yet, just a quick browse for a few minutes on the net the other day and found there are differing opinions on it, and how to go about it. Havent really had the time to get in depth looking into, but plan to eventually.

Any input would be appreciated.

Use marine paint and special primer that matches the paint.
After sanding thoroughly wash the hull then wipe with proper solvent at least 2X
Allow to dry in heated area longer than recommended before priming and painting
Paint with room at recommended temp-NO COLDER and on a day with low humidity
Some paints are better than others and you get what you pay for.
Gallons are less money than 3 quarts but don't expect extra paint to last in can more than 1 season

Vinyl graphics and stripes are easy to apply and cheaper than paint
