WCO Report - Dec 15

Winter has pounded Northwest Pennsylvania with high winds, frigid temperatures and plenty of snow. Although the Lake Erie shoreline again dodged the heaviest snow, areas to the West and South East received over 6 feet.

That sounds like an exaggeration, I was under the impression that the worst areas have received a couple feet.  Did anyone really get 6 feet of snow?

All combined from the last two storms we have had about 4 feet in southern Erie county.  I believe they got quite a bit more over toward Wattsburg and Corry so 6 feet is not out of the question.  With all the wind it is really hard to tell exactly how much is on the ground because it blows around so much.  Also, over the weekend we have a thaw and rain.  The snow compacted as it got wet so even though the original amounts were more, what is on the ground right now looks to be less.

Wow that's an insane amount of snow for such a short period in the beginning of December.  Have any good pics of the snow bings?

If you guys keep that much snow on the ground all winter long, then it's going to be a very rough year for the deer around that area.

I think I've read somewhere that when it starts getting up around 6 feet and above for the entire winter, that the snow can start significantly impacting deer mortality.  You guys just had that much in a week!

Erie deer are tough, just like erie locals. I grew up in Erie. If you can survive a few Erie winters, you can survive anywhere!! I now live in Central Pa. Winters around here are like winters in Florida! I can't get ANYONE to ice fish around here.

Very small area with that much snow..
All depending on where the bands of snow had set up...
Luckily that rain settled it a bit before the second blast..
I know trying to cut logs in 5 feet of snow really really suckks.

Bings is right. It's a narrow band that runs at the base of the first mountains Southeast of the lake. Sometimes this band reaches from just east of Corry all the way west past Edinboro...more often it barely reaches Union township. It's not uncommon for Corry to get over 400" of snow a year. Last year was over 440" (That's 37 feet of snow folks!). Just for reference sake...it's considered a bad winter when Erie (or Buffalo for that matter) gets 180-200". Usually meteorologists underestimate Corry's snowfall, but they've been pretty accurate this year.

My former neighbor is a retired meteorologist and he tracks temps and precipitation throughout the year. We had 69" so far for the year as of about 6:00 last Wed. night. We got hit pretty hard until early morning Thursday. So I'd guess we had over 6 feet by last Thurs. We got a big thaw over the weekend and just received about 6" on Monday and 18" yesterday/overnight with an additional 8-12" forecasted for today/tonight. This should bring us close to 9 feet by mid-December. This may seem like a lot of snow, but we're used to it here. Although over 100" of snow by mid-December is a bit more than normal.

I wouldn't say if you can survive Erie you can survive anywhere.

My son lived in Steamboat Springs, Co. for 10 years. 6 feet there is a dusting. They got almost 30 feet the year he moved. He gave up a free apartment he had because he had to shovel the roof and plow the road in lieu of rent, and he just couldn't handle it anymore.

honestly that kind of snow is not for me. i can deal with some, but that would get old real fast. cabin fever and a sore back from shoveling would set in.

I took a drive during work that took me from Erie through Ripley into Westfield, New York. It was about the same amount of snow throughout. I headed south into Chatauqua, around it into Jamestown. Things definitely got a little worse. From Jamestown I drove over to Corry through Sugar Grove. Man, I feared for my life. It was a whiteout the rest of the way there. I couldn't believe the difference in accumulation. I pulled into my destination in Corry and the snow was piled at least 7 feet on both sides of the truck. I think with the heavy winds we had off the lakeshore, it blew the snow right over Erie and into southeast Erie County.
