Weekend Conditions

Going to be up in the area this weekend and wondering what the creek conditions are looking like. My guess is ice and slush. Not too optimistic, but since i'll be up there I'm bringing my fly gear. Thanks

Bring your long johns and wool socks.  It is supposed to warm up some, but still be in the 20's.

Leave the fly gear at home, unless you like casting an icey rope .

This weekend a line may stay wet for a few casts before it freezes.  The spinning gear may be the way to go.  I have not been up to look at the streams for a few days.  Maybe some of the guys up in Erie will be able to tell you how much open water there is.  It has been really pretty cold with temp's well below freezing since Sunday.

The sun is out right now...  There are few flakes falling and the sun shining... It is a winter wonderland....  as long as you don't have drive on the snow covered roads, dig out the driveway, fight for a parking place at the mall, run out to the wood shed to get wood, take the dogs for a walk....   It does look nice sitting in my office looking out at it...

I took a ride to Erie today and only the faster areas of Elk Creek were open.

there were still some areas open on monday when i was there, but like others have said, with temps in the teens and single digits, and brutal wind, outlook is not good.

I went fishing the day before the rain when it got up to 43 degrees... walked basically the entire way from rick road to mckean pump station... saw one fish caught, and one fish in the water... didnt want anything I had... some guy caught 5-7 on minnows or so he said... saw he had caught 2 tho

It was rough tho... was still icey everywhere, but still nice to get out!

Ya thats how I got a bunch to hit a few days before at Walnut... until... 2 pinners decided out of the entire open stream (there were 4 guys on the entire stream) to fish directly to the right and left of me... successfully ruining my drifts, so I just went for a walk to warm up the feet and ended up leaving :-/

I did inadvertently hook a dorsal fin of a fish that was about 14 lbs and fought it for awhile while trying to get the fish unsnagged... finally got it off... then hooked a tree on the backlash... and lost everything :-/ (weird how those beasts can blend in and not be seen in the larger holes... sometimes they stick out like a 7ft basketball player at an asian convention)

But the jigs didnt work at all on elk that day... water was quite a deep green color and fish weren't really holding in the faster swallower places... needed something scented...

The next day when the streams got washed out wld have been good fishin on the East Side... but I had other stuff going on :-/
