Target
The talk in my inner circle for a few weeks now has been giving the steelhead a target to aim at. The circle has been getting many pulls but nothing to really connect. We talked about our fish to hand flies and the one thing that all of our flies have in common is they all had a target point. Some of the target points we use are located in the front of the fly. Some are located in the back of the fly. Even some target points were hanging off of the fly. I took my intruder pattern and turned my target point from the front of the fly to the rear. Put it in the rear for the simple fact, hey thats where the hook is. I am not saying that a focal point in front is not good. I am sure there are many ESL guys out there that will agree with me on that. With this fly here I also added a stacked dubbing head. I added that for the simple fact to try and push more water. I dont have the luxery or desire, for that matter, to fish perfect green water everytime out. Will adding the stacked head and reversing the target point help? Maybe maybe not. I dont think it could hurt though. Here are some photos. I assure you that the photos are of the same fly. The first photo gives the appearence of an overdressed fly. But the 2nd picture may change your mind on that. Comments and suggestions are welcome. You can even talk about my sweet stripper guide wrap if you like.

Sounds like a solid concept to me. Next step is to tell us how it's working out.

I've had good success last year on the Rocky and Conny during Spring swinging intruders. Last year I started tying them with angora (chartruese or pink) sucker spawn on a #8 egg hook off of braid tied to a #4 body hook with hook removed. I would wrap black or olive soft hackle at the front of the egg to give it even resistance. It would wiggle a bit like the tail of a minnow swimming. I don't tie mine on tubes but I'm sure you can accommodate them. I would use the across and down swing but also an upstream swing. I would cast it up on a seam line and let it sink a bit, then strip it back with big quick strips. That is how I caught the drop back female shown below on the Rocky. I was on my last strip when she darted out from a rock an slammed the intruder from the side. Goto the website listed if the photos do not show up. When can we fish again? Rickerd [img][/img]

I like the "rear target idea" Still need to get these wet in real fishing situations but they pass the bath tub test lol... KJH, by the way, I knew you would convert!

Sure did. Under the bridge downtown. Willoughby that is. Fly was a tad twisted up when she was done with it.

Since I am not cool and dont have the high tech flex tubing, I have to go old school. I know of a long slow pool where this would swing nicely. Its locked up right now. But there will be a time. I didnt really know what I wanted to do here. I just wanted an egg off the rear of the fly. I think it came together nicely. Ball of peacock ice dubbing for a butt. Golden Pheasant rump feather folded back collar style over the butt. Repeat but with larger feather. dubbing ball, spun black arctic fox collar. Underwing of 4 doubled back pieces of peacock krystal flash. Overwing of black rhea. some JC for style points and there you have it. I was thinking of using small bead chain eyes but the idea came late and I proportioned everything out to use JC. Maybe some bead chains in the future. The fly kind of has the same style as that shrimpy fly I posted over in KJs thread. But for sure a total different fly all together. The reason for the 2 pics is because I couldnt catch every detail I wanted to show in just 1 pic. Hope you like.

lol swinger I read the title and thought this post was about your tramp stamp...
The moment of truth. Where all other things unconsciously melt away from our minds the instant a fish takes our fly. We stand there on the water with wide eyes, caught in a battle stance with an idea of confidence and hope
