What rod?

I am looking to get a new fly rod that I can use as a general use rod. I am looking at something fun to fish with on french creek for smallies, and in trout season for pelletheads. I also hit some VERY small streams for native brookies so would like to get something for that. My budget is virtually non exsistant I.E. I am looking to get out with an entire package (rod, reel, and line) for as close to $100 as possible. I am interested in a 3-4 wt with a moderate action and currently have a 8wt okuma that I do like alot. As far as a reel, I pretty well set on a pflueger metalist they are dependable and cost effective.

My main question is what would be a good weight rod for what I am looking to do, catch pellet heads and smallies and have some fun rod bending action?

Imput is appreciated.

Thank you,

Jacob

You will get 95 expert opinions on this post, but if it were me i'd look for something in 8'6" - 9' 4 5 wt range.

    Yep what he said.

Also...it would surprise me if you got rod, reel, and line for under 100 bucks (MSRP)...and managed to avoid having 2 of those 3 being pretty crappy.

FishUSA has Redington Crosswater outfits for 119.99. I have 2 moderately priced Redington rods and they fish well. Try the 8 or 8.5ft 5 weights. They will suit your needs.

4-5 weight in those lengths would be great for trout and smallies. a 7' 3 weight would be most ideal for small brookies in SMALL creeks in my opinion. but the 4-5 weight 8 ft long will be a well rounded rod. good luck

A 5wt readington would be great to start with .Works french creek smallies and also does well on oil creak for trout. I fly fish both creeks alot.
