ORIGINAL: retired guy Always figured sneaking up on them while they are in their beds was one of the best stalking experiences a hunter can have. You did it all the right way or you wouldnt have done it- no problem taking the shot- but be careful it can be a vewy vewy twicky shot. Like the neck myself.-- NEVER would try it with a bow- even with a few doz. bow deer taken. +1 I've only found deer bedded down during a hunt once. Two doe when I didn't have a doe license. Up on top of a high rock on a ridge, and down almost directly below me, at first light, were two doe bedded down in the snow. Pretty cool. I did spot a 4pt buck this year and sucessfully stalk up to within about 25 yards of him. Of course, it was snowing and windy, and the wind was blowing directly from the deer to me, but I still felt pretty successful. I saw him first and got within easy shooting range. It was a proud hunting moment even though I didn't fire.

tmiller.. I thought about that, I always go into them the exact same way from the house to my spot .. Even after a few days of not hunting there I could not find any tracks, my #1 thought is because there are 2 "groups" of them running and feeding in the field at night together they are traveling with or along with who ever is the leader and that deer is not a let's go into those hemlocks critter so the rest just follow along.. ???? I'll get my pay-back though... Instead of starting my back yard feeding Christmas Eve like always they will have to wait until January 15th after the late archery season .. as for squirrel hunting ... I was taught to shoot them any way you can... I do not see the big deal, I was just explaining why I have not shot a deer yet ?????? If a guy can take pride in shooting a bedded deer so be it... gheezz.... I just could not do that... it's just like the guys who shot cubs and fawns... it's legal and some think nothing about doing it.. others just don't do it....

Doc, I don't shoot pheasants on he ground either, but it is more of a safety thing than anything else. Nothing good comes from shooting birds on the ground when people and dogs are involved. But the way i look at it - a lone hunter with no dogs that shoots a pheasant on the ground doesn't make it any less dead. As for stalking a deer well enough to kill it in its bed, I would consider that an extraordinary feat that would be celebrated, not berated. there would be a whole passel full of skill (and luck) involved to pull that off -- much more so than sitting along a known trail or feeding are and ambushing one that was minding it own business.
The poster formally known as Duncsdad Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

No deer in the hemlocks? No corn in the either, food plots are not baiting piling corn is baiting! As to shooting a deer in it's bed 2 bucks,3 does W/rifle and 2 does with a flint in 46 years.I felt like those where some of my greatest hunts, sneeking up on a deer is a tough thing to do.

I've only been able to do it a handful of times but The bucks I've managed to track and catch in their beds gave me much more satisfaction than any I've taken by stand hunting. Anyone can get lucky and sit on the golden stump at the right moment but to track a buck out and beat all his senses is the ultimate challenge and I think most serious deer hunters would agree. I've managed to do it twice since AR/HR and really enjoyed both experiences. Try it a few times before you knock it Doc. Just knowing which track to take is a challenge in itself.

Hey 10, Try and work a bedding area. Use the wind and terrain on wet quiet walking days and be as ssssllllloooowwww as you can possibly be. Make still hunting look like a hundred yard dash. Its neat-sometimes you can get so close it will surprise you and if your real quiet and slow and dont work the spot too much they wont spook out of it forever, remember though-there may be several and you have to see them first. I dont hesitate to CRAWL into an area either. Had a doe come in late and bed about 20 feet from me once, there were already a couple of others about 40 yards out bed down. That was my best ever and will never happen again- sometmes the stars line up just right.

The closest I've come to doing that is working pine plantations during a winter storm. I've caught them in their beds many times that way but usually it's on snow. In my younger days whenever there was fresh snow in season or out I would find what I thought was a buck track and follow it to see what it did and if it really was a buck. I've got to where after tracking one a hundred yards I'am about 75% accurate on it's sex. It's getting harder the older I get but the only good buck I saw during rifle season this year was after about a 1-1/2 hour tracking job and it saw me first. To me the ultimate challenge is tracking a buck and shooting it in it's bed. I shot one of my bear that way after about a 6 hour chase and didn't get the shot on another after a 7 hour track on the last day a few years ago. Lots of fun but it sure helps if your young and strong.

Right on the head with the age thing-here too My bud says "remember when we'd shootem and just grab a horn and drag" , the last big one we got had to be cut in half and we each took half out. It was a good size deer but not THAT big- we just got older. Thats one reason I take a hard look at the bedding areas -more than the old days. Less of a hike and more of a very long stalk. Find those bedding areas very early and work out a couple of entry lanes long before the season. Surprisingly they try to use those areas even under pressure on thier home turf.

maybe they should trash the "DMAPs" and there would be more deer for ya doc....remember this doc stated all his deer were killed with one shot..thats why he don't shoot moving or bedded deer, he might ruin his "one shot" record..

not sure bedded deer would hurt my "one shot" record as I said = I do not see any trouble hitting a deer that is laying down resting or sleeping or even better yet standing still....,. I just prefer standing still .. I see too many deer running around here wounded after the season and I am sure most of those were hit while running..... all ready seen a doe with a dangling front leg on Thursday.. that's the #1 thing I love about AR.. not easy to count points on a running deer...so I think some of that style shooting has been reduced... although I did hear this conversation over the radio one day... BANG ---- BANG ---- BANG "" Was that you ED ? "" ""YEAH"" ""You get it?"" "" NOT SURE "" "" What was it?"" ""NOT SURE "" Unbelievable === what can I say ??????

I am sure most of those were hit while running Now what in the world would possess you to make a biased statement like that. You have no legitimate reason to say that other than to try to justify your claim of only shooting standing deer. After all it was you who Missed a deer standing at 10 yards by your own admission. You could just as easily have hit it in the leg or elsewhere. Shots sometimes miss their intended spot for various reasons having nothing to do with the movement of the animal. Your not "sure" of anything except perhaps you saw a injured animal. Hell, it may have been hit by a car.

I agree with Doc 100%- how often do we hear bang bang bang real quick. I couldnt do that on a range with a rest and a still target and be accurate. It happens regardless of sex or antler restrictions. Face it- there are some slobs out there and we responsible hunters pay the price of their actions- in many many ways they keep the antis full of ammo. Yes 10 your point is well made-- responsible hunters do miss on occasion and unfortunately bad shots happen (nervs-brush etc) but the far and away majority is bang bang bang. Not many can make that TV 300 yard shot either but next time your at a club or with a bunch of guys throw it out there and see how many say they tried it, then ask them how often they ever practiced for it- on thier 100 yard range. When they reply " oh yeaaa I practice" ask them about bullet drop and wind affect and see how long it takes them to come up with some BS answer. It only the rare guy who is really into that.

Thanks retired guy.. S-10 would not agree with me if I said the sky was blue.. it's his passion to be on the other side of any of my opinions... sure guys miss with a rifle... never said they didn't ... I just do not and will not believe it's that many who missed a standing deer... and BTW I missed with a crossbow.. the first time I shot it at a live deer.... no excuse but I believe that is part of why I missed... had it been a shot with my rifle I would not have missed.. guaranteed S-10 lives in a "fantasy world" where all the hunters obey the law and there are no slobs other than those that enter a public area where a hunter is already positioned... he rarely see or talks to the average hunters that are out there in today deer hunting world on public ground... even when he posts he refers to all the guys who agree with him, I do not think he even knows anyone that does not agree with him.... breaks the game codes... or is a slob hunter... so naturally he comes by his holier than thou attitude from that.. Nice to see someone agrees with me and is not afraid to say that we have alot of poor hunters and slobs in today deer hunting world... not something I or you are proud to say but it is the TRUTH.... and I am never going to defend them for any reason ....

What I don't do is accuse everyone of being a slob hunter or think that every injured deer is a result of a careless hunter like you seem to do Doc. Before HR there were 30,000 deer killed by vehicles and many thousands more running around injured. What slob shot them? (Guaranteed not to miss) . Bet you didn't think you would miss at 10 yds either before it happened. (rarely sees or talks to the average hunter on public ground) That's another example of a B.S. biased statement from someone who doesn't even know me or where I hunt. (Holier than thou attitude) More B.S. from someone who thinks anyone who doesn't hunt the way he does is a outlaw slob hunter. I tend to believe in innocent until proven guilty. I think it is supposed to be that way in a democracy. I'll agree with you when you type something you can back up with facts and not your biased opinions.

Doc Wrote on his site =saw probably over 20 deer today and only got one shot off and I missed... the doe was really to far away for my skill level but I gave it a try it was quiting time 4:50pm and I could not wait any longer to let her get closer..... my evening hunting is over for this rifle season...Work Doc wrote on this site= Had it been a shot with the rifle I would not have missed, guaranteed. Isn't it Doc who is always blasting others for taking unethical shots. Doc, are you sure the one running around with a leg dangling isn't the one you shot at? If it was too far for an ethical shot it was probably to far to follow up on to see if you crippled rather than missed. What's the difference between a running shot and one beyound your skill level? Better keep track of your lies if you want to have any credibility on this board Doc.

Im not getting into any arguments over hunting-period. There are lots of guys out there with lots of ways to do it. Some more productive than others . Some of us really dont keep score and just go for the fun of it and some of us ( like myself) are so addicted we do it as a lifestyle. We are all doing basically the same thing in different ways. To some the season is judged by numbers and to some its judged by satisfaction. I missed a huge buck last year after passing all seasons waiting just for him. My muzzel loader went pop instead of bang (just the cap) after stalking to about 30 yards in his bed - second to last day of the year. Had all the fun and none of the work. He ran off and I laughed out loud. My opinion was that it was a very succesful season. Some guys might cry about it and grouse about a clogged pin hole but the way I see it-part of the game. Another guy may work just as hard and wait all year for a yearling - no stone throwing - just different strokes. 10--Took a small fork a few years ago on the first day of rifle season in an area where I had the only permit to hunt and there were several really nice racks. He came in early to a scent I had out and he was limping badly. I passed and then got up and followed him till I got a clean shot. He had a partially healed compound fracture on a back leg and was nothing but coyote bait. Sometimes those things happen. Ya gotta give back now and then.

SLOW DAY AT WORK === As for the doe I missed.. she was standing in a snow covered field, I followed her tracks across the field and into the woods on the other side.. probably 3-4 hundred yards.. and I saw her running the whole time..not a single spot of blood so I know it was a clean miss.. and as folks have pointed out many times... most hunters have missed a deer.. just happens this year I missed two.. that does not make me a liar.. just human and like most Pa deer hunters misses happen.. I am not proud I took that shot.. truth is I should not have.. I fell victim to last minute temptation... but wanted to share the experience with guys on my board... I could have not said anything As for the press releases... I already posted I saw more and bigger bucks this year... My usual two spots were void of deer for the most part and I walked more than any year recently, thus probably why I saw more and bigger bucks... just as the releases said I might....

Maybe it's time for you to get off your high horse and stop lecturing folks on what shots to take or practicing, or bragging about not missing shots. You missed once because you didn't take the time to practice and get familiar with your weapon and missed another because by your own admission it was beyond your skill level. By your own definition that makes you either a poor hunter or a slob hunter . Either you need to change your definition or stop doing the things you define as slob hunting. S--t happens to all of us at times but your the only one that does the exact opposite of what he preach's to the rest of us. We all have missed.. But if my bow is dropping at 10 yards so much that I have to compensate....Hmmmmmmm.. Doc you went all over this during the crossbow debate remember. All those slob Compound elists that were to lazy to practice stick deer all the time... You are getting back as you do not practice what you preach... You were the poster child for my not being for full inclusion.. 1. Bought a new weapon in season and did not practice and be familiar with it's abilities. 2. Never practiced from a treestand before trying to hunt out of one. 3. Weapon not properly sighted in(no practice) a good crossbow properly sighted in will be dead on out to at least 20 yards with no compensation needed.. But again (no practice to know that) You always said crossbows and compounds were equal in power.. What has changed that yours is now so powerful... Thank God it was a clean miss.(which would have to be off by a foot to not even get hair) at 10 yards..Really ??

where do I begin ????????? Had it been a shot with my rifle I would not have missed, guaranteed -End Quote---and this was After he already did miss with the rifle I would not have missed because it was a 10 yard shot not a couple hundred yards.... I was referring to the miss with the crossbow in archery season.... weeks before the miss in rifle season... so NO I had not already missed with a rifle....gheezz..... All those slob Compound elists that were to lazy to practice stick deer all the time... Never said that... what I said was there are alot of compound shooters who are not as good as they think they are or past that there are... and as I recall I said most of the "stuck deer" are from taking poor shots... guys even posted about taking "poor" shots and were called on it... proving my point once again... But if my bow is dropping at 10 yards so much that I have to compensate....Hmmmmmmm.. do you know how my bow shoots..NO do you know the weight of my arrows... NO do you know the weight of my broadheads...NO do you know the height of the tree stand I was in for the first time.. NO.... all of those could and do effect arrow flight... you the expert should know that... so how in the hell do you know anything about the shot or my 50 year old compound other than just another of your MANY attempts at be-littling me ???? 1. Bought a new weapon in season and did not practice and be familiar with it's abilities. How do you know how much I practiced ????? You claim I did not practice just because I missed one shot.... wait another couple weeks and see how I do from the ground and/or the fact I NOW know I do not have to compensate for drop with a crossbow.... I still have my 4 tags to fill... should I fill them all just to prove a point ???? Heck maybe the bolt hit a branch I did not see.. after all --- I could watch my arrow in flight from the Bear whitetail.. not so with the Horton.... You always said crossbows and compounds were equal in power.. What has changed that yours is now so powerful... what world do you live in ???? many of today's compounds are as fast as crossbow.... some probably faster than the Horton model I bought...my SLOW bear was part of the reason I was in favor of crossbows...

It might have something to do with the fact you posted you ordered it on Oct 3, it was delivered on Oct 9 and you took it hunting on Oct 11. Some folks might think that leaves little time to get used to it.

Big difference shooting of your picnic table at known yardages than it is in the woods out of a treestand at unknown yardages. Probably why many Archers practice and shoot 3-D. Your excuses that pertain to your compound have nothing to do with your miss. You were using a crossbow. Either not fully understanding the power of your weapon or not enough practice to be a little bit familiar with your Bolt drop.. You were only 15 feet of the ground, no need for any compensation in arrow drop. I would like to see you fill all your tags. You need the meat and do not begrudge anyone there deer. But to sound like you are going to do it out of spite is just plain childish.... You brought this on yourself by hammering compound users the way you do... As far as you using what is said on this board as gospel about hunting, just remember back when 1 of the poles taken didn't come out to what you agreed with, you dismissed it beacuse "This is only a fishing board and doesn't really count."

I have NEVER denied that the miss was due to me not 100% understand my new crossbow... you guys are the ones making it more than that with the no practice, etc.. "This is only a fishing board and doesn't really count." don't remember if that is exactly what I said or meant or how you took it... anyhow.. what I meant was the pole had about 30 replies out of thousands of members.... so really not a good showing for the members here... and most folks who dis-agree with some of you do not reply to this site anyhow,,, they see the abuse they will get ..... have no real plans on filling all the tags.. just my usual two deer... BTW = Had I never shot a compound or at least not thought about my old one - I may not have missed ???????? just like SOME fly-fisherman.. I "hammer" folks that think because of the weapon or style fishing they use makes them any better than anyone else...
