Cleaning and caring for Bucktails

My neighbors were lucky enough to fill their deer tags this week, and I was lucky enough for them to share by giving me two bucktails.  Does anyone have any good advice for care and cleaning them?  I read somewhere that they can be cleaned with Borax, but I am not sure what other steps to take.  Any advice?

I cover them with sea salt. Let sit a few days and add more. Let sit few days and add more. Let sit few days and add more. After all that I wash them off in water. Cover with borax and let sit. Repeat. Repeat. When I think they have sat long enough I will rinse them out and hang dry. Done. No expert on this but that works for me

    Sage,
I believe if you take a razor blade and open them up, remove the bone and any fat or flesh, then borax heavily and freeze, should be good to kill bugs and bacteria, store in plastic bag. Some may have more experience and better suggestions with this subject....curios myself if you would need to do more than that!

I have what is called a tail splitter.  It cuts the hair down the length so you can pull out the tail bone.   Once that is sone you can follow to directions provided by  swinger.

After your bucktails are dried and ready to use, I would wash and rinse them with dish soap a couple of times. The feathers and fur I use that have come from sources other than a fly shop tend to be a little oily and dirty, just the natural result of living in the outdoors, but it makes the individual hairs on a bucktail stick together so they don't stack well. I've done this with turkey feathers, grouse feathers, and bucktails, and it gets rid of the oil and dirt just fine.
