please do some practicing and get very familiar with you firearm before you head to the woods.  You would be surprised at what that will do to help your success rates, and it will also keep alot of deer from dying terrible deaths, or showing their wounded selves to some animal lover.  Neither option is good for us.

Good luck and have a ball!

No tag for me again this year, but I think I might take the Lyman GPR out to Ohio for their Muzzleloader, I still have 2 either sex tags.  I also have a gun my grandfather made from scratch, no kit involved, and it is gorgeous.  Curly maple.  Problem is, I am left handed, so it is ok for target, but I wont shoot a deer with it, because it is too ard to hold still with the lock being on the same side as my head.

Went out and burnt some powder today with the front-stuffers.

25 yards.  3 shots.

50 yards.  3 shots.
We used electric tape over the center of the targets, at 50 yards, because it was almost impossible to see the targets.

Results at 100 yards were horrible!

I can't blame the gun this year!

Hed, your results at 100 were horrible....really?

With the load you suggested I use I'm (to quote you) "dead nuts". I'm cutting holes at 50 yds. At 100 it's not as tight but still good, about 3 inch groups, but good enough that I'll confidently take a 100 yd shot.

I friggin love the gun btw. A co-worker of mine also bought one and his is shooting as well as mine.

Yeah, at 100 I was about 5 inches off, all directions.  Couldn't get it done.

Good to hear yours is ready to kill!

Good luck this season!

I'll never do that again in a million years.  I'd have a better chance throwing the gun at them.

When my dad was still hunting our favorite season was flintlock. He missed almost every deer he ever shot at that was standing still, even 30 yard shots. But put a deer running full tilt past him and he'd nail it every time, witnessed some truly amazing shots from him, guess it was the grouse hunter in him. Sure do miss those days...

heck, i shoot terrible.....but i missed a doe at 10 yards one time.......YA ten yards..... i musted dropped really fast thinking WOW i got her for sure!      after that miss...i havent shot one. if i shot as good as that at 50 yards i think i'd be more apt to do it.    maybe practice...and alot of powder later im sure i could improve.

Anyone out there today?  I won't get out till Friday.  Have been staring at snow cover for three weeks and anxiously waiting for the late season.  They are calling for 50 degrees and rain by the weekend.  Figures.

Hunted this evening, which lasted 45 minutes.
Blistering north winds.

On stand at 3:15.
3:50, 4 youngs bucks cross below me at 125 yards.
4:00, a large doe with twin bb's followed by a DANDY 9-pt walks out below me at 90 yards.  I glassed the buck for a minute or two.  Pulled the hammer back on the doe and let it fly.  She bucked into the air and ran 40 yards and stopped.  10 seconds later she got drunk and did the deathly side step all deer hunters like to see.  Double lung shot.

T/C Firestorm 50 cal.
295gr PowerBelt HP
100gr of Pyrodex

The 2010/2011 deer season will go into the books as one of my best seasons ever!

Congrats hed.

I was out all day.  Face is windburnt.  Miserable wind in most places.   We tried our best to stay out of it.   Buddy missed an 8 pt at daylight that was headed back to bed and dad missed a doe on a drive.  I didn't see any.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Congrats! Always nice to take a deer with a smoke pole. Where's the entrance hole? Did it pass through ?

Thanks and yes, although tough to see, it is a hair above the rear sight on the gun(in the pic).  It kinda looks like a "Rage slice" where the hair is cut.
Yes it passed through and was very noticeable but I didn't take a pic of it.

'kype,
It's 1:17 in the AM and my face is just now starting to thaw.  Brutal!

Congrats Hed!!  Great way to start the late and great season.  I'm jealous buddy, sitting at work knowing the snow will be gone by the time I get out.

Like you always say, all you have to do is move. I hunted in 15" of snow yesterday with it hanging from all the trees. Would love to send some of it your way.

I gave 4 does a pass in the afternoon, they were at 50 yds for 20 minutes. I almost primed the pan, lol. I've got some time to hunt here and there the next 3 weeks so I'm gonna hold out for a buck. Maybe I'll take a doe in the last few days of the season if I'm presented with the chance but if not, I don't really care. It's just fun to be out!

I hunted the morning in a small ground blind. I lasted 3 hours before I had to get on my feet, the wind and cold was brutal. I really like the place I put this blind up, it's a thicket with a bedding area about 100 yds away and with downed tree tops from a select cut early in the fall. The deer are browsing in the area and if I can get the wind right it should produce. Since I put the blind up on the 22nd, there are tracks around it and lots in the area in general.

Yep.  This one had a better chance of gettin' away...it was standing still!
Thanks.
