What type of loads are you shooting from it. I know guys that shoot good groups from that gun and can get you some info if you like. I agree the late season is a lot of fun. It can make for some tough hunting though. I'll be using Dad's .50 Long Rifle. This thing's taller than my kid. Built from scratch--not a kit. My son will be using my .50 PA Hunter. All predicated on whether or not I fill my tag this weekend.

I've been taking the flinter in rifle. I couldn't get the powder in the pan quick enough the other day. It's that what it's about ? Maybe Saturday, huh. All this cold weather could open up to some nice weather for the season. Not fun crunching thru snow by yourself. Lefty lyman deerstalker 50 cal. Hornady conicals. 90 grains of 2F. Remember, powder before bullet.
My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

TC Firestorm. 90 grains of 2F pushing a 245 grain aerotip Powerbelt. Did alot of shooting this summer after my less than stellar performance last winter. Settled on this load after trying many combinations of just about everything. Feeling much more confident this time around.

What everyone using to keep the snow off the lock? I use a custom made cover from a light Cordura fabric with a waterproof backing.

We found that the loose black powder ignites much faster than the pellets from this gun. If you use pellets you should dump 20 grains of 2F before the pellets . That will speed up ignition a bit. Just curious if you tried a Hornady .44 cal 245gr. XTP in a sabot? I also had the trigger taken down to 3lbs. dpms, My TC throws those Aerotips all over the place! Hollow Points are dead nuts, though! Hopefully I have improved as well. Ironhed

I very old (first year they came out) Thompson Renagade big bore 54 cal,I had problems hitting deer with the old blade sight but did get several after several tries.Thats when there where deer everywhere before HR.I change the sights the first year they ok'd it with Williams fib. optics and have missed but 2 deer in 10 years taking 8(all does).I shoot the old Thomp. Max-Ball 430 grs of knock down, with a small load of 4F with 100 grs 2F.I'll pass this year on hunting and save a doe for next year. But muzzle seasons is the best season I like, soft fresh snow, snow camo, and a very SLOOOW sneak,it's a lot of fun.PS since the AR/HR I've never seen a buck in late season, prior I've seen several.

Yes, I tried the Hornady XTP and they grouped pretty good(2 1/2 inches at 50). The 245 Aeros were the best by far though for me.

With 90 grains of 2F they were cutting one big hole at 50. Course, if your 295 hollows are dead nutz, why experiment. Good luck.

Those of you that shoot the powerbelts, has anyone ever experienced the tumbling effect of the slug when it leaves the barrel? I've heard some poeple say they tumble instead of spinning from the twist in the barrel. They say when they hit sideways they are not as effective because they cant expand and doesnt leave a blood trail. I've always just used the round ball and patch since thats what we were only allowed to use at the time plus a box of 500 balls last forever.

It has a lot to due with the twist in the barrel. a 1 in 60 twist is kinda slow for a conical bullet and best for a patched round ball. What's the twist on the gun your shooting? I have an old T/C Renegade .54 cal I bought back in the early 80's. I believe they were manufactured with a 1:48 twist. XTP shot well for me but not impressed with performance on critters. Shot 2 - both recoverd but bullet seemed way too fragile. 275gr. maxi-hunters shoot better and as far as I'm concerned do a much better job when they get there. Expand well when they hit something solid and can go stem to stern if need be. XTP's in both cases came apart when they hit something solid and failed to penetrate any farther.

Big Tuna, Sorry but not interested in selling or trading. I bought a new .50 cal firestorm for my son to use last year but we never made it out. The firestorm is a nice gun. The only problem we have with it is the pan powder kept leaking out of the pan! You really have to keep it level at all times and check it frequently. Found that out this year in the early season. My renegade seals the pan pretty good, I can lean it up againt trees, lay it across my lap and walk around with it and the powder seems to stay in there.
